Hi all,
I have just been given an old P3 system for my daughter and want to connect it to my own system on a wireless network (as cheaply as possible). Both systems are running XP Pro. I bought an old D-Link DWL-1000AP wireless access point and a wireless adapter. My broadband modem (Motorola Surfboard 4100) is connected to my system via USB and is working, and I have connected the access point to the network card via ethernet, but all I am getting is a "network cable unplugged" message.
As a sidenote, I have installed the driver and then put the wireless adapter in the P3 system but it is not recognised. I read on the box that it uses PCI v2.2 and am wondering whether the motherboard supports this (it is dated 1999). The computer is a Compaq DeskPro En 815E, and the manual says nothing about the PCI version number.

Sorry for the longwinded post but I wanted to give as much detail as possible. Any help will be massively appreciated.....thanks

Jodo

Hi Jodo,

I haven't seen an access point hooked to a NIC. Usually I would connect it to a router, switch or hub. The setup that I'm familiar with is modem to router, switch or hub and your wired computer and access point connected there.

The ethernet hub will be the least expensive option.

Thanks for the reply Steve, looks like the lack of a hub is where I'm going wrong then.
