View Full Version : Weird Wireless Network Behavior

I was wondering if anyone has any idea what is going on with my Wireless router.

Problem: about every 4-6 weeks I am unable to bring up any web pages. The rest of the time everything works great for the most part (occasionally get a "can't find (insert webaddress)". I will be online looking at a page and then suddenly all attempts to bring up ANY page fail.
What I have done to troubleshoot this problem is turn off computer, unplug the power supply for the router, let it sit for a minute, and then plug it back in and turn on the computer.
At that point everything works fine again for another 4-6 weeks. I am wondering if I just have to accept that every month or so I need to unplug the router. Any thoughts?

System specs:
Dell Dimension 3000 2.4Ghz Celeron D Processor
512 Ram
Comcast Cable modem
Netgear Wirless Router WGT624 v2

I would lean more to your modem. You show in sig that you are using Comcast. I have a network at my dad's house on a cable modem and he is loosing signal regularly. A power down/up cycle of the modem always corrects the problem. I had a similare problem with my DSL modem when I first got it and had to have it replaced.
A couple of questions to issolate the problem:
Has this problem always existed or just starting?
When you power down the router, are you also powering down the modem?
If yes, try just the modem and just the router.

Yes, it has always existed. I set up the network back in March 2005.
No, I'm just powering down the router.

When I had the cable modem going directly into the computer this problem did not exist. So I don't feel its the modem. I could be wrong though

I would think it's the router and since you report no problem when running a wired connection, it's definitely the router.

At this point, I would call tech support at netgear or look deeply in their support pages and see if they have this as a known/reported problem.

If they don't post back & we'll start troubleshooting this together.

Thanks ClassicSoftware and Bassman for your help.

I will see what Netgear KnowBase has to say and post back my findings.

Well I spent a couple hours on the Netgear website looking for info on the problem. What I found is that there are many others with the same problem but it is more sever (instead of losing their internet connection every 4-6 weeks, they're losing connection every 15-20 minutes).

Also discovered that doing the frimware update causes more problems than it fixes.

I'm sure it is the router now. Though I still have no idea on how to fix it. Its not a big issue I guess - unless it gets worse.

This is a known issue. I would call their tech support and ask if they have any tweaks for the router settings.
