I have an HP laptop on XP that just starting running very very slow. It takes forever to load a webpage. I rebooted and the reboot takes almost 5 minutes. I looked in MSCONFIG and didn't really see anything that stuck out as a problem. I have heard that RAM issues can cause this but it just started 2 days ago and no new programs were loaded. Any idea where to start? Thanks

Start by:

1) Download, install and update Adaware (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5). Perform a full system scan and fix all critical errors.

2) Download, install and update Spybot Search and Destroy (http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html). Scan and fix all items in red.

3) Perform an on-line Scan at Housecall (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/)

4) Download a copy of Hijackthis (http://www.subratam.org/main/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19&Itemid=41). Install it into a permanent folder. Choose the option to scan and generate a log. DO NOT fix anything on your own. Post the contents of the log here for review along with the results of the scans from 1-3

Once you've done that, you can use the following to speed boot time in general:

http://home.comcast.net/~bathenkel/files/fastboot.zip

That zip file contains the bootvis tool from Microsoft as well as the 27 page instruction manual...

But before you use it, scan it for viruses...never trust someone you don't know...

The read me in that zip file pops up an illegal operation error here if I try to open it.

HG,

That's weird, I just D/L'ed and tested it on a different PC and it worked fine.

I'll convert it to a plain .txt file and upload it again, same URL, just give me a few minutes...

I didn't have any form of Word on my pc and inside the Zip box I'd double click on the read me, I'd get a popup that said 'The file is too big for Notepad to open. Would you like to use WordPad instead'. I'd click ok and then get the illegal operation error. I unzipped to my desktop - same error there.

I installed WordViewer 97 and problem gone. Thanks HG.
