In a word, yes.
There is no software that I am aware of viral or otherwise that can make cd open part of the way.....

installed cd-rom win95. Tried jumper on master, slave, and cable select settings and when booting it goes to windows95 screen and then goes to a flashing cursor and stays there.
HELP!

 Yes after reading i see if its only one drive the jumper should be on master, but this cdrom only has numbers 123, not master, slave, or cable select, so the red line on the cable is next to the power cable its red line is also next to the red cable line. But when we boot past win 95 screen it gos to a flashing curser???????????????any ideas

Can you boot into Windows without the cd-rom connected? If yes, you replaced a dead drive with another DOA drive.

Is your BIOS set to boot to the floppy first, cd-rom second and harddrive third?
And is your harddrive being recognised in the POST screen or in BIOS?
What is and what is the age of this system? How long ago was Win95 installed? Is there any up to date firewall and antivirus software installed as well?
Have you tried reinstalling or repairing the install?
I know, I know, this sounds like a quiz and you didn't study for it, right? ;)

:) and then it boots to C: hard drive.thats it. Stats form fornt of pc. win 95 1.6gb, pentium 133mhz, 32mb ram, PCI local bus, PCI local bus IDE hard drive interface. As far as the install all i did was pull out the broken cdrom, and put in the other one, and started the pc. And I dont have the drivers yet I going to get them off the internet. And yes in post harddrive, cdrom drive is there. And I dont know the age my brother gave it to me to fix, i dont know where he got it. Its a Packard Bell. So i put back the broken cdrom and it boots up fine.?????????????

;) Correct me if Im wrong Im talking win95 older pc, but are there only 2 channals for the IDE 2 primary, and 2 secondary, so phiscally you can only have 4 devices 1, harddrive 2, floppy, 3 dcrom drive and a fourth. so my hard drive is pllugged to the mortherboard on 1 channel, and my floppy to another channel on the motherboard, so then wouldnt my cdrom have to be on the same cable as a slave?????????????????, because in this pc its pulgged into the motherboard on a seperate slot.??????????????

Most motherboards of that era had a floppy pinout controller that you could connect 2 devices onto. One as A: (floppy) and the other as B: (sometimes a tape drive or larger 5-1/2 inch floppy drive).
Then there is usually 2 more controller pinouts to ciontrol ide-1 and ide-2. Both of these can control 2 devices each so you could have 2 cd-roms and 2 harddrives.
But it is possible to have an old cable that only has a connector for 1 device but you could usually use another cable with a middle connector if you wanted to add a drive.
But some manufacturer's customized the motherboards and did not leave pinouts for some connectors such as a secondary ide channel and in such a case you would be limited to 2 devices unless you used a pci or isa expansion card with which you could add another 2, sometimes 4 devices.
There was also some older boards that the cd-rom connected directly to the soundcard and wouldn't even fit any of the other ide or floppy interfaces.
______________
I'd look around for a cd-rom for your pc and try that to see if your problems persist.

:) So I have a data cable that has the extra connection, so connect it to the channel that the harddrive is on as a slave???????? I know they say you should leave the harddrive solo because of processing faster, but the other ide with the floppy is primary and in the bios set to boot to first, so can i connect my cdrom to that cable as a slave?????????????? my cdrom was connected the a white slot, by it self is that a pci slot???????????????

 Well same problem different story, after disconneting my cdrom, it boots to cdrom not read a abort or retry, but the bios is set to boot to the floopy then c drive so why would it notboot all the way. If i leave the cdrom connected sees it in post flashes95 screen to flashing curser will not boot past that Ive tryed several cdrom's. Maybe it needs the drivers loaded first to boot??????????????? :rolleyes:The other cdrom drives sere cdrw drives the orginal was a cd-reader 8xbby NEC Corporation. I bet if i pick up the same drive it would work???????????? ANY BETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any help for the weary :o Also in setup, Secondary IDE master says not installed, when you hit enter it says IDE device configuration auto configured, IDE translation mode auto configured, multiple sector setting auto configured, and fast program i/o modes auto configured if that helps

 What is a disk utility?????????? how can it lock up a cdrom drive????????????? :(

A Disk utility that would lock up your drive would be something along the lines of INCD which uses cd-rw's to use them like giant floppies. TThe utilities come with programs for burners such as Roxio EZCD Creator or NERO Burning ROM.
as for your other posts, I'm a bit confused but about the ide controll;ers is concerned, the floppy controller is not considered an ide controller. There should be 2 more places to connect the wider ide cables on your motherboard as I mentioned in my above post. This would allow you to install 4 devices NOT counting floppies! 2 on primary ide-1 and 2 more on ide-2.
And you are correct in saying it is better NOT to connect an optical drive onto the same cable as your harddrive. So use the secondary cable if there is one.
Is there a cd in the drive when you right click it? Is it a good cd?

:D And so this long and confusing journey has a happy ending, beside's the headaches I proably gave you. But I am learning sometimes things are clear, and sometime's cloudy. Can you belive the drives were bad, so it was a hardware problem hard to believe, usually it's software. Boy I bet your really glad its over. THANK YO ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! iM PLAYING MY CDROM IT SOUNDS GREAT :)
