Hello, I'm having a problem w/ my config.sys

I am receiving an error msg at bootup telling me the system can't find the HIMEM.SYS file and my CONFIG.SYS has an error at LINE2. The computer will continue w/ the boot and goes into Win98 just fine. However, I'd like to get this corrected before it becomes a problem.

This started after I installed an ISA SCSI controller card & Diamond Winmodem card in my PC yesterday. The system found the new hardware and loaded the drivers. Apparently the SCSI had the driver embedded on the card and the modem drivers were installed from a CD.

I had some trouble installing the SCSI as the PC took a long time detecting the "device". Now, at initial boot, the PC takes a long time (30 -40 sec.) as it checks the SCSI card (Pinnacle SCSI Card)

I just built this computer using Fryes Electronics barebones sys. composed of an AMD Athlon XP 1800, ECS MB that uses a VIA KLE133 chipset (you can see the system at http://shop2.outpost.com/product/3207691

The barebones sys came w/ a modem and NIC card, but I removed the modem because it used the same back panel slot as the ISA SCSI card did. I need the SCSI for my Zip & Jaz drives.

I also intalled 512Mb PC133 ram, DVD ROM, CD-RW, & Seagate 80Mb HD.

I am running Win98 and Red Hat 7.2 and plan to upgrade to Win2K Pro when I get the bugs worked out.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm at the office and will try any suggestions this evening as that is where the PC is located.

Thanks in advance for help.

The first thing to do is Look at the config.sys file Using msconfig
if you are loading Himem sys . You don’t need it for win98
Remove the check mark next to it.

One exception to this is IF you are loading the scsi device drivers for the zip and Jaz drives.
These are only needed when you intend to work in DOS or when you create an emergency rescue disk set ..

You can remove the checks next to these scsi device drivers after the rescue disk is made.
Simply remove the check marks next to them also.

The most likely reason for the error message about himem.sys is the path is not correct .
it should read device = c:\windows\himem.sys

Rick, thanks for the info.

I'm assuming (uh oh) msconfig can be run from the command prompt window in Win98. I don't have to boot into dos?

Thanks again.

Hi.

To run msconfig, use start/run, and type msconfig in the box. Good luck!
