Hi there, just getting into male singer/songwriters and I'm looking for suggestions to beef up my collection. I am looking for more obscure recommendations, I already am familiar with biggies like Bob Dylan and Tom Waits. Right now I am most into Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, and Elliot Smith. Thanks in advance!

Welllll, let's see. How about Tom Cochrane (http://www.tomcochrane.com/) of Red Rider fame? Ray Charles (http://www.raycharles.com/), Randy Newman (http://www.randynewman.com/), Nat KingCole (http://www.nat-king-cole.org/).Leon Redbone (http://www.leonredbone.com/) was mentioned here just the other day.
Are you into the older stuff or anything of unique interest? ;)

If you are looking for people who write and sing:
How about Harry Chapin, Billy Joel, Elton John. As for singers Frank Sinatra is amazing and the sweetest sounding most amazing male singer (whether you like his music or not, the voice is amazing) is Johnny Mathis......

How about Van Morrison, Merle Haggard or maybe even Robert Johnson...

Thanks for the suggestions, that gives me some good stuff to work with. I'm really into anything, I've been solely listening to electronic music for a long time, and now I'm trying to branch out. It doesn't matter whether the artists are new or old, but people like Harry Chapin, Van Morrison, and Elton John are popular and recent enough that I've heard their music on the radio consciously, whereas the more obscure artists I won't have heard anything from and will be brand new to me.
Over the weekend I came across this guy: http://www.richardswift.us with clips: http://myspace.com/richardswift Anyone heard of him? Sounds like good stuff, piano and sort of bluesy lyrics.
Anyway, thanks again, I'm going to seek out clips to listen to.

I like to watch Austin City Limits on public television for exposure to artists I've never heard before. Within the last few months, I've seen and been really impressed with Robert Randolph and the Family Band (http://www.robertrandolph.net/) and Modest Mouse (http://www.modestmousemusic.com/).

Oh, you mean the overweight guy with the same underwear on that's now too small who holds a note so long because he can't get them off?
I don't know if I'd bother rendering to dvd for that...
He sounds as if he's in pain...

You will have to forgive me for liking reall music :). You see, for the past year I have been accopaning for a very, very good voice teacher. (She only teaches classical and musical theater, not "no-real-skill-neccesary" contemporary stuff.) So I have learnt many things, and every time I hear someone sing I know how to judge them. Yes, I believe Pavarotti is nearing the end of his career, but his older songs are great.

One newer singer who I have heard is good is Josh Groban. Never heard him though.

I just went and checked out the line up for the Austin City Limits 2005 Music Festival, and read a little about Martin Sexton (http://www.martinsexton.com/).
Hailed as “the finest new male singer-songwriter in recent memory” by Billboard, Martin Sexton returns to the Austin City Limits Music Festival this year after a previous appearance in 2003. Raised in Syracuse, NY, Sexton moved to Boston and quickly rose through the city’s “new folk” scene, releasing a debut cassette, In The Journey, in 1991 that eventually sold some 15,000 copies thanks to his relentless touring. Following one indie CD and two more on Atlantic Records, in 2003 Sexton started his own label, Kitchen Table Records, to release a two-disc live set, Live Wide Open. Honored in 1994 as Artist of the Year by the National Academy of Songwriters and winner of many Boston Music Awards, Sexton’s music features an inventive, highly rhythmic guitar picking style as well as a soulful voice that has earned him comparisons to Al Green, Otis Redding and Van Morrison. As The New York Times observes, “his unpretentious heartiness helps him focus on every soul singer’s goal: to amplify the sound of the ordinary heart.”

Seems I need to check out Austin City Limits, I didn't know it existed. That's good though because it will all be new to me.
