Paul T. You should have started your own topic, as trying to address two different problem in the same topic just confuses everybody. I will ask a moderator to split this off.

Upgrading to Win XP is best done by completely wiping the hard drive, and formatting/installing from scratch. Even if you only have an "upgrade" CD, this can be done, and it results in a more stable OS.

Have you checked the hardware in your computer against the Hardware Compatibility list at the Microsoft site? Does the computer have sufficient power to run XP?

Have you checked the Hardware Compatibility list, to ensure that the computer will run Win XP OK?

The easist way of wiping the drive, is to use a Win9x ( WinME is OK) boot floppy, and using fdisk to remove the partition, then making a new one.
Another way is to find the maker of the hard drive ( open the case and look) then download the makers utilities from their website. These will include tools for wiping the drive, and another to check that the drive is OK. Use both.

Assuming that you have wiped the drive, and started the WinXP install, using an upgrade version, at an early stage of the process, you will be asked for proof that you are elegible for the upgrade. At this point, change the Win XP CD for the Win ME cd, and click on OK. when prompted, just change the CDs back.

Its a message from God...nothing like this has ever happened before.

I find that whenever windows gives you something like "install failed. reboot and try again." 99.9% of the time it doesnt work. I tip my hat to you.
