I have two computers in my house connected via ethernet to a router and cable modem. Both computers are able to share the internet connection no problem, but for some reason one of the computers can't see the other one on the network. The computer running WinXP can see the computer running Win98SE, but not the other way around. I used the WinXP network setup on both computers. All my connections are good since the xp computer can see the other. Do I need another protocol installed? Right now I have Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Print Sharing, and TCP/IP setup. Any ideas?
Also, the Win98 computer can't send/recieve emails in outlook since setting up the network. It tries to use the dialup modem.
Thanks for the help guys, for anything you can say.

If your Not using the DUN ( Dial up network) you should remove it.
if you want to keep it. then you should go into the Internet setup in control panel and tell it to the lan/ connection .

In the win98 not seeing the XP system.
Have you set the file sharing enabled in XP?
If it’s not set the XP system will not even show up.
Open explorer and check the properties for the drive and or folders you want to share across the network. share should be enabled

There is a Windows XP Networking wizzard which will create a network disk for non X-P Computers. Once created, take the disk to the Win 98 computer and follow the instructions. In less than 5 minutes, you will be up and running
