Well am now about ready to try out XP. But when I setup my internet access Zone Alarm (which I loaded prior to setting up Connection) came up with the following. Have blocked all from the net. Are any of them needed? If not how do I disable them? Into Administration\SERVICES? then what?
(On dual boot and installed on Fat32)
Generic Host Processor for win32 services \
Microsoft Managment Console \
Services and Controller app \
TCP/IP Services Application \
Also IExplorer as server. \ (Have disabled this setting whilst enabling IE to access the net)

I'm sure iisbob anf Rick will add to this.
maybe even GH
first thing you want to do is go here (http://grc.com/UnPnP/UnPnP.htm) and get your UPnP port 5000 closed.

Generic Host Processor for win32 services starts many of the other processes on your computer. The RPC service which opens port 135 is started by "Svchost" which is the program name for "Generic Host Processor for win32...." It's not a good idea to disable either of these services, but you can and should limit their internet access.
Services and Controller app is really the "services.exe" program and runs your DNS client and other services. You will need to allow it to access the internet in order to surf the web. In Windows 2000 the default DNS settings caused the DNS client to try to register it's IP address with a DNS server. This always fails unless the DNS client is talking to a Windows 2000 DNS server on your network , so there is nothing to worry about. But Zonealarm will proably report it trying to connect everytime your internet connection is active.
Microsoft Management Console is the Windows interface that allow you to manage services for your computer. If you open the "local security policy" or the "Computer Management" icons, for instance, the window that opens is the Microsoft Management Console or MMC. There are alot of services that could be using the MMC and need to connect to something. However the "MMC" doesn't connect to anything ( it's just a "window" or interface) only the "snap-ins" ( the actual management objects) to the MMC do any connecting. Zonealarm is using a "friendly" name that sadly could mean anything. I would recommend you not allow it access to the internet.
