HELP!!
I am trying to connect my kids' computers to DSL SBC Yahoo! using 2wire modem and wireless adapters.
I have the XP computer connected to the net by wires. My pc is downstairs and the kids pc's are upstairs. I was told by SBC that the modem has a range of 300 yards and that there should be no problems hooking them up.
I get as far as the pc's trying to connect to the modem...then I get the error...the modem isn't on.
The DSL installation cd sees the wireless adapter, but there is no connection.
1. Do I need to set up a network?
2. Should I call SBC back and tell them that I need a wireless router?
3. The main pc is running XP and the 4 kids pcs are running 98SE.
Thanks!!

I'm not really up to speed on wireless modems but here are a few thoughts on your situation.
I presume there is some kind of routing device contained in the modem that would enable multiple computers to use the internet connection. Look in the manual that came with it (or pick it up on the internet) and of course, follow their recommendations.
I use a Linksys wireless router (sometimes) and it requires that each client computer go through a profile setup in order to connect. Your 2Wire modem might require the same.
If you think that distance might be a factor, you can take one of the kids computers and move it right up next to the modem and see if the situation changes.
You shouldn't have to set up a network in order to gain internet access for the computers.
And if nothing else, at least I bumped your post to the top of the list where the more knowledgeable folks might see it.... ;)

I finally got all the pcs up and running. For some reason, I couldn't use the Installation CD. It would get me as far as finding the connection and then stop!
Each one was different. On pc #1 I got as far as the adapter lighting up and then I had to call SBC for support. They lead me through the rest of the installation on #1.
#2 did not have the adapter card installed in Device Manager, but it was listed in networks...so I uninstalled the card and the TPC/IP software. I reinstalled the card and and the Installer CD got me to the point of showing the card in Programs. I then installed the network myself. [I did this at 2 o'clock this morning.] The link was established BUT when I went to RUN and typed in 'command' and at the prompt typed in'ipconfig' I got a fatal error could not find IP address. I went to bed after that.
This morning..I installed PC #3 and got as far as it showing up in Programs, then installed it the rest of the way manually. Typed in 'ipconfig' at the prompt and got addresses but not the one I needed. So I left the Dos-Prompt up and installed #4 PC same thing with it. Left the DOS-Promt up and called SBC.
On pc#3 & #4 all I had to do was type in 'ipconfig' again and they were online!! :p :p :D :D
#2 was another story. I was told that I needed to reinstall 98SE because 98 had problems [yeah right, I had just installed the internet on 3 other pc's running 98SE! ]
Anyway, I came downstairs to goole the problem and found out the I had caused the problem last night or early this morning when I uninstalled the TPC/IP protocol. I reinstalled the protocol and bingo!! I had an IP address!!
Now all 4 pcs are up and running, the kids are happy, I memorized the WEP number from having to put it in so many times. :)
Thanks for taking the time to read this and if anyone else has problems like I did, hopefully, this will help!!
Thanks again!
