Laptop Toshiba 320cdt
64mb ram
4gb hard disk
2mb I think graphics card
cdrom
WinMe

Pc became re-slow after time, so i fdisked, formated and re-installed ME, no probs.

Re-installed all my other progs as before. This time and on two other HDD, since i've tried I get the occasional "Blue screen of death", something to do with Error Fat01...etc

that isn't to much of a prob, but the whole system seems a lot slower, the pop-up menus and sticking, windows are taking ages to open and re-fresh.
Ran nortons 2002 to optimise and have down that.

There is next to nothing is "Start up menu",
Only goback and nortons anti-virus. (less than before)starting up with the pc.

I know it would benefit with more ram, but at £120 a 128mb, and with only one slot for ram it isn't an option at present..

Any other tips, or advice as to why it's slower?

disabled Animation in windows etc

help.....

Dazman,

Would you mind posting the exact error message you receive?

I' hadnt had the error for a day so forgot, but just got it again, it's quite random, usually just after windows has just loaded, but sometimes when there is quite alot of disk activity.

I can usually sort most things out, by cant work this error out:

File name: VFAT(01) +0000D52B Error: OE: 0028: C004CF8B

If you guys can work this out it would be a great help

thanks in advance!

You might want to check HERE (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q256015) to start and see if this applies.

How bout THIS (http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q272960)?

Still doing some searching...

One article suggested Msconfig and shutting down all TSRs and see if that helps.

THIS (http://www.windows-help.net/ttw/index.html) is the Windows Tweaking Tool...was interesing reading trying to get a handle on the Vfat. The setting you use controls the size of various internal data structures used by the 32-bit file access driver (VFAT).

When you use the Mobile Or Docking System setting, VFAT allocates memory to record the 16 most recently accessed folders and the 337 most recently accessed files. This consumes approximately 5KB of memory.

When you use the Desktop Computer setting, VFAT allocates memory to record the 32 most recently accessed folders and the 677 most recently accessed files. This consumes approximately 10KB of memory.

When you use the Network Server setting, VFAT allocates memory to record the 64 most recently accessed folders and the 2729 most recently accessed files. This consumes approximately 40KB of memory.
