Have you installed anything lately?

When was the last time it correctly worked? What has changed, other than the error, since then?

The link below is a list of errors, but no exact match...... http://www.infinisource.com/techfiles/fatal-0e-errors.html

thanx mjc,yes i have downloaded something (java from sun) but i was getting this before this but it has gradually got worse, i have since uninstalled the java plugin because it kept going off, i thought it could have something to do with the video card that i had put in last year, just because of the vdx in the error, my pc is quite old now and maybe might need a new hard drive probably, it makes a lot of winding noises that sound like it comes from the cd drive, usually before the error occurs, i'm not very pc literate. thanx for reply

Might be time for a clean out and reload of everything...

When was the last time you ran scandisk? Defrag?

They would be good places to start, also you might want to check out Device Manager for any conflicts, and the check in Safe Mode for any "ghost drivers"...

Do a search in Find/Files or Folders for ctpci9x.vxd(I believe it's this file name and not cptc19x.vxd), right click on the file, click Properties/Version. It should be a virtual driver for your Creative Sound Blaster sound card.
If so, go to Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs and if your sound card's software is listed there, then remove it. (If it's not there, then right click on My Computer, click Properties/Device Manager, click the + next to 'Sound, Video, and Game Controllers', double click on your sound card, click Drivers/Driver File Details, click on each driver, note the supplier below, and write down all that are from your sound card's manuf., go back to Find/Files or Folders and delete each driver you wrote down.)
Now remove your sound card from Dev. Mgr., restart the computer, Windows will recognize the sound card, reinstall the drivers from the sound card's CD.
See if that works.

thanx guys,i will do a defrag tonight and see if this helps
i have looked at the properties of the sound card and it states
it is working correctly, i do not have a cd to reinstall (i bought pc
second hand) i have looked at the downloaded program files in windows
and found 5 files containing activex control, one of the files is
damaged should i remove this from the programs? it states
total size.....none
creation date....none
last accessed...none
version...none
do you think this could be the cause of the prob? thanx for the help

Umm....possible, but I don't think so, unless the offending ActiveX is malware and it didn't quite install properly.

So, go ahead and remove it, then run a virus scan eith up to date definitions....if you can get online with it you can also try: http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall/

Did you do a search for ctpci9x.vxd?
If it's a virtual driver for your Creative sound card, then note which folder it's in, delete it to the Recycle Bin(but do not delete it from there), and replace it with a new file from this site: http://www.starshopper.net/Freeware/Drivers/Audio/Sound%20Blaster%2016%20PCI/WIN9XDRV/
If things happen to get screwed up even more, then just replace the new file with the original.

You may also be able to d/l the drivers for your sound card from the manuf's site: http://www.americas.creative.com/support/

Hi, yes ski it is the sound card and i have moved the files to the recycle bin as you said, i have tried going on the sites that i usually get the errors and they work fine without the soundcard working, so this is obviously the problem, i went to the link that you gave me to download ctpci9x.vxd but have to find a file to install it and open it, i have tried this(sorry i am so stupid) and i don't know where i have to put it so that i can replace this for the old file, the original was in c-drive,windows,system and is still there, thanks for the help, oh yes, i have done a defrag. thanx

Del,
Please do not be so hard on yourself. You are not stupid, you're just a little inexperienced with computers as I once was.

If the original ctpci9x.vxd file is still in the C:\Windows\System folder, then right click on it and click Delete. This should move it to the Recycle Bin. Then, right click on the replacement ctpci9x.vxd file that you d/l, click Cut, right click on the C:\Windows\System folder, and click Paste. This should move the d/l file into the System folder.

If Windows will not allow you to delete the original ctpci9x.vxd file, then right click on the d/l file, click Cut, right click on the System folder, click Paste, it will ask you if you want to replace the existing ctpci9x.vxd file with the new one, click Yes.

And if it still won't let you replace it bott up into "Safe Mode" and do the same in there because the sound card is disabled in safe mode.....
