You all were such a big help with my recent problem, I thought I would ask about the nuisance. Every morning when I turn on my computer (Dell, 98SE, 80gig [with old 10gig as slave], 256RAM), it tells me that I did not proeperly shut it down and that it must scan the disc for errors. Waiting for the scan is at least time consuming. It has done this for months, even though I shut it down from the Start button. I have defragged both drives. Any ideas about how to make this stop? Thank you. Tom

You can work around it by pressing the X key when ScanDisk starts.

But if you want to disable ScanDisk from running at all during startup(even after a bad shutdown), then go to Start/Run, type msconfig, click OK, click Advanced, check the box for 'Disable ScanDisk after bad shutdown', and click OK.

Windows may not be sending the cache to the harddrive fast enough hence it thinks there's errors on startup. See MSKB article here (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;273017) that deals with this issue.

If that does not work, follow a few link in the replies mentioned here (http://www.windowsforumz.com/Setup-Help-Scandisk-run-start-ftopict415785.html) to see if you can resolve it.

Thanks for the responses. I am going to try the download, and if that fails (and my computer still works after the download), I may just go in and disconnect the scandisk. Thanks again. I will be in touch. Tom

Windows ME does this to me all the time. Windows 98 very rarely did this and my works XP has never done it. Perhaps it's an ME thing. Which operating system do you use?
