I really hope im putting this in the right area as the model of the computer that is having USB trouble is an acer travelmate 230. Okay the model has two USB ports...one is loose and doesnt work (thats not what im posting about)...the other will send power to a USB device, but no devices work on it. (for example I tried hooking up a wireless "modem" (to connect to my cousins wireless connection) and the power light came on...but not connection....ive tried other USB devices as well and get the same issue.) Well i noticed that under the hardware manager there is a problem with one of the USB controllers (1 of 3 showing up in the hardware manager...the other two show no problems). No matter what driver i download on it (ive tried about 7) is still says that the hardware is not working properly...CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME...im running windows xp pro.

Have you tried removing any reference to USB from Device Manager and then letting it reinstall automatically on restart?

I just tried that and here is what happened...It automatically downloaded the drivers for three "standard pci to usb host controller"s and three "usb root hub"s....it detected a fourth "usb host controller" and the hardware wizard popped up...i tried installing the same driver for it that windows auto downloaded for the rest and allas its not working (ive tried every available driver loaded onto windows concerning USBs and still not working).

That notebook has usb 2 ports and comes with XP. Have you installed SP-2 which has the usb-2 drivers you need on it?

Dont like the sound of a loose connection and what is the reported problem with the one of three controllers.
Also which OS? You could also try using something like a USB mouse (which being a HID or Human Interface Device requires no special drivers - any such software being generic on Win98se and later).
