Hi, I have a BVD108A DVD player that will not recignise DVD's. It was fine up to about a week ago. It will see CD's and play them, games etc...
I am at a loss with this one. I reinstalled the drivers, couldn't find any new. On W98sec edtion. Ive removed it from device manager and let it reinstall. I really dont know what to try since its seeing CD's.
ANY ideas will be appreciated

Do you have DVD software installed a DVD drive alone will not play DVDs just like a CD-RW will not burn CDs without proper software. My DVD software came with my video card also got one with my sound card. I didn't get one with my DVD drive.

I should have mentioned it, CyberLink Power DVD. Like I said, it was working fine. Just all the sudden, it doesn't want to play DVD's anymore.
You know what? I watched that movie with Ted Dancen-Talking with the dead-
Or something like that. Maybe spooks are trying to communicate with me?
I swear sometimes my PC's are haunted:-) Just kidden , dont get out the tin foil hat just yet! Its just got me baffled and I cant track down anything on the net or on message boards. Might be mechanical, and its shot.
Thanks for tring.

Brian, you may have to drop the software and then reinstall it may have gotten corrupted?
Have you tried cleaning the DVD player some times they do need to be cleaned?

Have you installed any NEW drivers on your computer? Have you gone to the Microsoft update page and installed any new patches etc. around the time the drive quit running properly? When I upgraded my copy of Win98 on the MS update page I lost all my hardware buffers for my sound card, the Sound Blaster driver dissapeared and to solve the problem I had to install the newest set of drivers from the the creative website. While my problem had to do with my sound card the same could be happening with your dvd driver, ie. some drivers being messed up or overwritten.

The first time I installed Windows it took only one try. When I tried re-installing Windows at a later date it took 30+ tries before I got it right... go figure. =P

I wish my memory was better.
First, I dont think its the DVD software, but I have learned not to ignore anything, I will try it. The reason being that it doesn't get that far. Depending on how I try to open F: (my DVD) depends on the message I get. If I try right from My Computer: F: is not accessable/retry/cancel.
If i try from DVD player software I just get a message that I need to put in a DVD (which is there). Normally oyu can do a explore on a drive. The fact that the dr doesn't even exist, unless there is a "CD" in it....
I tried to remember exactly what I was doing around the time it quit. Which is almost impossible, I dont watch that many DVD's for one, the other is that I do so much on this PC it isnt funny.
In the last few days Ive had at least 10 different shareware programs on and off, looking for a good PC to PC/phone APP, Ive loaded a IRC(mIRC), and I could go on and on. Ive switched modems-went from a soft to a hard (which just made me think- I was in the tower maybe I bumped something[but again, u'd think the whole thing would go down]) But you get the picture.
I couldnt find any driver (new) for it, tried at driver guide and a couple other places. Its using the dr's that the os is loading (W98), and of course device manager says they are the best bla bla bla...
Its an enigma for me. I will try to uninstall the DVD player software and look in the box (I alsoi went and downloaded new DVD player software but havn't installed it yet, thinking that maybe...), but I can't think of what else to try.
Again, I really appreciate the help, thanks

HEY FOLKS-SUCCESS-GOT IT WORKING,
and boy dont I feel like a schmuck!
HEADCLEANER!@!!!!
I really didn't think it was that when it wasn't even being recognised. Like there was no drive to clean! But that is what did it.
Hey borgdrone1of2,
Believe it or not, I was so sure it wasnt cleaner, I did the other solution you mentioned. But I wanted to ask you what the NOIDE reference you mention was, if you could explain it more to me?
Thanks again everyone, for your help
