a few things to check...
-make sure file sharing is enabled on all pcs
-share out drives on each computer
-try pinging each other computer, from each computer... to make sure everythings connected
-disable any firewall temporarily, and see if that allows it to work... if so, its software problems then. i know my norton internet security has a network setup wizard where you can set a range of acceptable IPs.
-check your router, make sure all computers are connected properly

ok sharing is enabled
drives are all shared out
dont know how to ping
when i Disable firewall it still goes. Like some times i completely turn it off and i still can't get to some web sites.
everything is connected to the router correctly.
okey......i will tell you how to ping the other computers from yours. Go to start then in Run enter CMD and then the command prompt will open and then check your IP address. right donwn IPCONFIG and hit enter. okey then you can see like 196.144.2.1 this ip address. go to your friends computer and write down his ip address and then ping from your computer to his computer like ping 196.144.2.1 if the signal lost it means you have somthing wrong if that computer receive your signal and it shows 100% then it means your network is good.
