im trying to set up a 10/100baseT network, and i'll be using a switch and utp cable.
the utp cable have orange pair, green pair, blue pair, brown pair wires. What is the correct order of the color?
When do uplink ports should be used?
When do i use cross cabling?

orangewhite, orange, greenwhite,blue, bluewhite, green, brownwhite, brown.
use uplink if your going from switch to switch or hub to hub.
Crossover from pc to pc or switch to switch

just another one, what signals do each of these twisted pairs carry (i.e. recieve, send ????)
and is
orangewhite, orange, greenwhite,blue, bluewhite, green, brownwhite, brown
the standard order???
would it be different if somebody will use another combination

1 and 2 transmit 3 and 6 receive for a straight through cable.
Swap them for a crossover cable.

The cables and the wiring order come directly from the AT&T phone system standards, these were standard issue switch cables that were adapted for use by the TCP/IP engineers.

how about the other wires 4 5 7 8 what do they carry.

They don't carry anything. They are unused.
