My computer is not booting. A few days ago when I turned it on, I smelled something burning so I quickly turned the box off. When I plugged it back in nothing happened. So I changed the power supply (300ATX)and now the system turns on but nothing else happens. All fans are running and all I get is a black screen. I checked all the connection and everything is secure. BTW, the was a virus on the HD which I was going to get rid of when all this happened. Any relation??

Any help would be appreciated

Well If you smelled Ozone burning you definatly fried something, could be just about anything seems the screen is black first thing to try would be a different monitor, if you tried that and same thing I would start by taking it back to the bare essentials and see what you have there ?

I know it is not the monitor, because I have tried it on a different monitor. Them smell was like burned rubber, the box was open when this happened.

Any Ideas??

Any lights on your mobo? We had same problem with a mobo recently, but according to mobo manual, the lights on the mobo indicated the chip "not installed properly or defective". Sigh..the chip was fried. Also, did you check the jumper settings to make sure nothing got changed? And you are being very careful about the electrostatic discharge stuff..like wearing the wrist band or maintaining constant contact with the case? Did you try taking the mobo out of the case and checking it?

There are the led light for power and the HD but nothing else. Also, if by chance there was a short, could it have fried my HD. I can hear the hard drive when the power is turned on.

Thanks to all who are contirubuting....

Just wondering, if flashing LED lights mean that the MOBO is OK or could it be damaged. Trying to figure out what happened and what was affected.

Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks....

I rather suspect the mobo was damaged in some way, but Charles has a troubleshooting section.. here at PC Guide (http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/comp/mbsys/gen.htm) that you could glance over. The tech I consulted on our problem mobo suggested removing the mobo from the case (put on nonconductive surface, like cardboard or something), taking everything off mobo except for chip and heatsink and RAM, I think..then check lights on board. Then connect video card, and check. And so forth. First, we replaced chip and then moved to next step..and still had no display. Whereupon we called tech again, and he gave us a RMA on the mobo because was brand new. If your mobo is still under warranty..think most are two years..you might consider calling their tech support or contacting them via their website.

Truth is that I am out of my depth..this is my husband's area of expertise. Don't know the answer to your hard drive question, but sincerely hope it is not damaged. But, as I mentioned, be very careful with that ESD stuff, and you did have your puter on a surge protector, right? If you live in the boonies like us where power is often "uncertain", please consider a UPS too. My APC has already squeaked this morning as we did one of our normal brownout things. It's not really funny when I think about it, but our power company recommends and "rents" surge protectors.. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

A flashing HD LED is ok, but a flashing power LED is not good.
Suspect a bad MB.

If the flashing LED you are talking about is a diagnostic LED on the motherboard consult the manual for the meaning of the flash.
