I have been given a Compaq Presario Notebook to take alook at as it has a DVD/CD RW drive and its doesn't seem recognise anything on normal CDR media it seems they are blank when they are not. It plays DVD films but when playing a DVD film from the drive the picture is good but the sound is distorted. The processor usage is 100% but I think this will be normall, will it not
Is this a buggered Drive???
Cheers!

on the laptop was a trail version of PowerDVD V4.0. thats all I had to play with. Would atrial version corrupt the sound to make you buy it I wonder.

I don't know if it would allow DVDs to play at all if it had expired. PowerDVD is a pretty lean program when it comes to system resources, compared to WinDVD or Windows Media Player for example.
Some drives do have a hard time reading CD-Rs, but I wouldn't expect that behavior from a CDRW/DVD drive. What are the other system specs: CPU, RAM, video memory?
In the meantime, you can try updating the sound card drivers and video drivers. There may be improved versions that could help with the DVD issue. As far as not reading CD-Rs, try burning them at a slower speed if you plan on using them in the laptop and see if that helps
And this is a longshot, but you could try a CD drive cleaning disc...

Have seen quite a few drives that will read data but not play DVD's or vice versa.. Try cleaning then look for a replacement. Also Win DVD download is fre from the Compaq website for your machine you could try this as well.

How does WinDVD run for you? Every system I've ever used it on it's been a real pig, but I do know people that use it fine...

The Duron models will catch and glitch somewhat but the Athlons do just fine..
