I built a computer with the following specs
DFI lanparty mother board
2.8 ghz p4 processor
2 x 512 cosiar ram
450 watt power supply
ATI 9600 Pro

It ran great for 3 months then the power supply died. Replaced the power supply with a 400 watt and temp jumped up to 65C from 45C. ran it for about a month like that. tried reapplying the thermo paste on the heatsink. started it went into BIOS and the temp was 94 and it shutdown after about 20 seconds. reapplied the thermo paste and tried it again and get no post, all the fans are but no power light on case.
-tried barebones
-tried a 500watt power supply
-tried new processor and heatsink

Could the mother board be damaged from the processor overheating?

If my previous post didn't make sense I can try to explain it better if it will help.

All I really need to know is if overheating the CPU can damage the motherboard.

Yep. Heat can damage everything but the screws holding it together.

Is that Farenheit or Centigrade? 94°F is no problem, I wish this thing ran that cool. 94°C is definitely NOT good news.

Depending upon how much heat is generated and why, the motherboard can be damaged as a result, and if someting happens to short the right contacts it can also damage both. A screw, for instance, could work loose somehow and fall into the right spot, the whole thing would be shorted and could actually cause a fire.

Is your CPU fan running? Are you applying thermal compound correctly, just a thin layer? It should not squeeze out the sides of the heatsink like a PBJ sandwich...Are you sure the heatsink is installed correctly? Are the clips on either side functioning and getting the clamp tight?

I can't think of anything else, if that's 94°C, the only way it should get that hot in 20-30 seconds is with no heatsink at all, so if the heatsink is installed, it has to be cocked over at an angle or not getting clamped down fully.

The temp is is in Centigrade

The fan was running, i applied the thermal compound as thin as i could get, it didn't squeeze out sides.

I had problems getting one of the claps lock, but it seemed tight.

Would the new CPU i tried be alright?
