Strange, I could find no discussion about Windows Vista on this forum.

Windows Vista is Microsoft's next version of its Windows operating system, to follow Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. It was previously known by the codename Longhorn (for a full list, see Microsoft codenames); the name "Vista" was unveiled on July 22, 2005.

Interesting screenshots.

There has been no "dedicated" discussion of what is now to be called Vista (wonder if that name will survive the impending lawsuit?) or Longhorn. It has showed up in discussions, though. You can find them if you look. Mostly, I think, we have discussed the progressive slide from the lofty goals of what it was supposed to be to what it will be (no WinFS, .NET issues, etc). Also I think there has been discussion of application compatibility, drivers, and the motivation--or lack thereof--to pay for the migration.

That name will generate lawsuits in any case, a small software company just down the road from MS' Redmond headquarters is named Vista Software, and has been in business there for several years.

I saw a headline last night (didn't read the article) that the suit has been filed.

Smallish company, M$ could by them out for, oh...a million each. No problem.

OK. I admit it's pretty. And I do really like the idea of adding meta data to files--very useful. But you've gotta give me more than that to get me to pay for an "upgrade".

It's only in what--beta1/2 stage--so I'm thinking I won't have to even consider my choices till late next year. And even then, I'll wait till I see it in action on somebody else's machine.

If you read the captions for the slideshow pics, the OS is not stable in many respects, of course this is at a pre-beta stage but the reason to upgrade is supposed to be rock solid system stability?
