Hi. I don't know which area this belongs in but My PC doesn't work. Here's what happened.

I was surfing the net last and my computer just restarted out of nowhere.

I logged back on and brought up a explorer window. It freezes.

I get back on and I try to virus scan and it freezes.

I try to get on again but I dont see anything. The monitor acts like it's on by itself. What wrong and what can I do? I can't afford a new one or expensive repairs.

Download a copy of my diagnostic flowcharts from here
www.erniek.eclipse.co.uk/downloads/sylvanderdiags.zip
and print them to leaf through.
Begin on the STARTUP chart.

Do you hear the single short beep generated during the POST? No?
Do you see any sign that the POST started? [flashing LED's?]

If POST did appear to run and there's a beep, but no signal is being received by your monitor, go to the DISPLAY chart.
Is the lead connected ok?

Is there any signal output by the video [card] do you think?
The video [card] would normally be enabled during the POST, but if the POST didn't run or didn't reach that point then...NO POST, and no enabling of the video [card].

Try reseating your video card [if you have one], and then your RAM.
If that doesn't work, try resetting your BIOS, then a "bare-bones-boot".

Make backups of C: when all's well and if you have any problems [that might be software related], restore a good backup.
If that doesn't fix the problem, then it's not a software problem.

Use "Image" [for DOS] on the free "Emergency Boot CD" = EBCD, from http://ebcd.pcministry.com/ to backup partitions to an ".img" file on a FAT32 Partition, and restore entire partitions from there.

Use "TBIview" [or free from www.terabyteunlimited.com/utilities.html ] to restore 1 or more folders/files whilst within Windows.
