This has got me really confused. OK, here goes:

I installed a new SATA hard drive and it was assigned drive letter F:. My main hard drive was C: . . . my DVD-ROM drive was D: and my DVD-RW was E:. So, why I don't know, I went and changed my new hard drive to D:, my DVD-ROM to E: and my DVD-RW to F: . All was great until I reset. Then my computer said it couldn't read PATA-0 (DVD-ROM) or PATA-1 (DVD-RW). After the computer loaded up, my DVD- drives were both gone. They are not in the device manager, or anywhere.

I tried System Restore, unplugging and plugging back in the IDE ribbon to the mother board, and changing the new hard drive back to F: . . . but no disc drives.

HELP ME PLEASE :)

First off, welcome to the PC Guide. A good place with many good and knowledgeable people.

Re. the bold print above, could you be more explicit? When you say "my computer said", is that during the post process or when you're actually in windows? In other words, is your bios not recognizing your optical drives, or is it just windows? And what do you mean by "reset"? What was reset? Finally, what version windows?

With System Restore and the ability to change drive letters the deduction is that the OS is WinXP or later. Agree that checking whether seen in the BIOS setup could be useful to know.

What do you have listed under "IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS" in Device Manger. In any case you could delete all entries there and reboot.

The other thing you might try is to detach the SATA and only attach one of the opticals; try it as a single optical on the second IDE channel on its own and if not recognised there then slaved to the HDD on the first IDE channel.

PS
Short term memory loss on my part but it could also be a noide problem with the registry requiring a "Registry Patch".
