hi,
I recently had a low memory warning in partition C and so checked the files. I came across this file named TFR7.tmp in the foll directory
C:\Documents and Settings\Prasad\Local Settings\Temp
Its size is 3.99GB and that is almost 50% of my C drive. I'm wondering if I can safely delete this file, given that it has a .tmp extension. (.tmp stands for temporary files, i suppose. Correct me if i'm wrong). Help me.. My Pc is a P4 with intel 845 MoBo, 512 MB RAM, 80GB HDD and with Windows XP Pro..

Welcome to the PC Guide!
I moved this to Windows forum as not likely hardware related.

A .tmp extension signifies a temporary file. Try to delete it. If it's not currently in use by the system, or has system or hidden attributes set, it should delete.

If you only "Delete" it, all that will happen is that it will go to the Recycle Bin.
Everything in the Recycle Bin still occupies space on the HDD.
To stop it occupying space, you need to...
1. Empty the Recycle Bin, or delete this file from the bin.
2. Use "Eraser" [really good prog, I URGE you to install and use] to irrecoverably "Erase" the file.
Eraser & Delete complement each other really well.
e.g. Say you wanted to replace a set of files with a new set [to try them out].
You send set1 to the bin using "Delete".
You try out set2.
You don't like them, so you "Erase" them and "Restore" set1 from the bin.
Use DiskFrontier = http://dl.winsite.com/bin/downl?500000031670 to study your HDD space usage, to see if there are any other space wasters like these.

I've learned some very useful things also.
The best is to make backups.
At the moment I'm using "Image" for DOS run from the free bootable "Emergency Boot CD" = EBCD from http://ebcd.pcministry.com/
If you want this and need instructions just ask.
