Hello all,
I am trying to rid my friends laptop of all Scumware. I thought I could just unhook from my ethernet card and plug into the ethernet card in the laptop. Here is my problem, I am trying to connect to the internet via my broadband connection (cable) in my room. I've tried everything but am unable to connect. I thought it was an IP address problem so I went in CMD and used IPCONFIG/release. No luck there. Next I even tried to enter my IP address manually still no luck. I know very little about using Network Connections. Any help would be great. Also is there anyway I can just start from scratch as far as setting up a new connection?
Thanks,
Jason

Any firewalls on the computer could stop it from connecting to the internet, I couldnt get a connection until I allowed it through Pandaware (Anti-virus program). Also this probably wouldnt be it but if there is another connection set as default then it might not see the new connection.

Without installing your cable modem software/exe and configuring it on your mates laptop, cleaning the laptop then reinstalling and configuring back on your pc, or, buy a router, set it up (you may need to reconfigure modem - once) and you can plug pc`s in as and when.
Hope it helps.

what's the IP ur getting, if u get any ip in the range 0.0.0.0, 169.x.x.x or 192.x.x.x, then it could be a problem in this case try reinstalling tcp/ip, also delete winsock and winsock2 from the registry and try it should work fine.

Another thing to try. Some broadband providers need you to call their support line and provide them with the address of the network interface card so they can enter it into their system.
When I set up my service I had to do that with my desktop. Then when I got a laptop also, I had to call them and give them the address of my NIC on the laptop in order to establish connection.
Hope this helps.

You have not finished cleaning up the scumware on the PC. Utill you do that, it's almost pointless to start another thread about this PC.

I posted them at the same time. I thought it would be easier to fix the spyware problems if I could use the internet to download, and update, the software I would need to use directly to the laptop. (And thanks to you, Classicsoftware, I think I have fixed the problems. Will post an update in the other thread when I am done) That's way I posted 2 threads. The laptop has no A: drive, but does have a cd burner and I found a CD-RW that I had and made life a bit easier for me....I've given up on trying to access the internet via my connection at home with the laptop....
Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions.....
