Well I installed Firefox and then removed it. Problem is all my html files are associated with it and I can't seem to make them open with IE.
IE itself works fine but it is not in the internet explorer folder. In fact I cant find it anywhere on the drive.
If it works then why can I not find it. And where has it gone.
Am running XP (not sp2) and can see hidden files.
Thanks for any help

IE's normal home is at "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"
Control Panel == Internet Options == Programs Tab
Then Hit "Reset Web Settings" and put a check in the box "Internet Explorer should check to see if it is the default browser".

well i did that and it is still not in the folder. I cant find it anywhere on the hard drive. How can it still run if it isn't there. It only works on this account. Other users cant get to it.
Anyone?

How are you starting it up?
You could have a peep at the IE icon found under Start == All Programs or the icon in the Quick Launch toolbar; (and NOT the icon on the desktop if you have one there). RClick on it and choose properties. On the shortcut Tab, the path to the IE executable should be shown under "Target".

The file must be there and be either superhidden or be a hidden system file. Did you uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" box as well as enabling "Show hidden files and folders"??

If you go into the registry and look at...
"HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\shell\open\command" key...
My "Default Data" reads "C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\iexplore.exe".
Your's will tell you where "iexplore.exe" last lived.
[Where it aught to be now to match the registry settings that make it work]
To make it work [once you find it or install it]...
Go into the registry to...
The HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT key...
For file extension types...
htm and html keys...
Make the "Default Data" read htmlfile.
That is, only if you have an "htmlfile" key that looks ok.
My "htmlfile\shell" key has sub-keys:
edit
open
opennew
print
printto
Make sure the addresses in the "Default Data" in the "command" sub-keys beneath those ["Open\Command" etc] are correct.
Backup the keys or the whole of the registry before making any changes and make sure you know how, and are able to restore.

Here's the htmlfile key, with its sub-keys.

Here is...
"HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\html" key, present "Default Data" for operating "Firefox".
This must be altered as previously explained to make "Iexplore.exe" work.

Wow thanks for the replies. Again you guys are the bomb. Sorry local term.
Well after showing system files its there. It wasn't always hidden. What made it suddenly become hidden?
Thanx again. It all works fine now.

What made it suddenly become hidden?
Perhaps it suddenly became pathologically shy.
