I would think that a virus is unlikely but that you have probably altered the partition tables while adding a second HDD and thus making the boot.ini file references incorrect or by having unknowingly hidden a partition.

The first thing I would try is to boot to the installation CD and use R to go to the Recovery Console. Then run
bootcfg /rebuild (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q291980/)
from the Recovery Console's command prompt.

Post back if this is not successful or try a Repair Installation (http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm)

hmm simple stuff first;
Remove the floppy disk from the machine and reboot. Remove any CD ROM's and try the same thing.

well i did manage to repair the problem but i did something stupid: I installed windows again so now i have 2 windows family edition on the same computer, which is annoying on the restart, but i don't think it really does something to the performance f the computer, just made me reinstall all off my programs, whcih actually made my computer much cleaner.how do i do this?
Thanks in advacne

First off edit the boot.ini file so that you can tell which installation is which. RClick MyComputer -- Properties -- Advanced -- Startup and Recovery -- Settings -- Edit Button.

On the lines under Operating Systems the text between the inverted commas is what gets displayed in the boot menu. Edit one or both so that you can tell which menu is which when it displays; eg "Microsoft Windows XP Home old" and "Microsoft Windows XP Home new".

When you are sure which one is which you just delete the unwdanted line from boot.ini and if there is then only one entry under [Operating Systems] the boot menu will no longer show up during boot up. The next thing to consider is to delete or format the old partition or just the Windows folder in it in order to reclaim the space taken up. Once again you must be sure which one is which so renaming Windows to WindowsTemp would allow you to identify the relevant folder prior to deleting it definitively.
