I am buying a laptop to replace my desktop PC and would like to transfer all the files I have, to the laptop. Is there some kind of adapter cable available to connect the HD from my PC to the laptop to do this file transfer? I just need the personal files, not the O/S.

Thank you

Could you just set up a network and share your files between the two?

hockey man has it correct. You can connect the two computers with a cross over cable and transfere the files.

Depending on how large the number of files, you might be able to transfer them via CD.

That assumes you have an Ethernet card in the desktop, if you do not they are pretty cheap and much faster than most alternatives.
Another alternative is to get a 256MB-512MB USB thumb drive, and copy/paste the files onto the drive, then copy/paste the files onto the laptop. A couple of transfers and you are done, and you still have the thumb drive available as portable storage.

Depends on your setup. If you have broadband and a router, you just need to make a little network.....

Describe your situation more clearly.

Type of internet access?

If broadband, do you have a router?

How much data are we talking about?

What kind of data?

You might be able to zip it up and e-mail to yourself and get the e-mail on the notebook.
