no sound

i have windows xp pro as os. everything was fine before a week. i had shut down my pc and restarted it after a week. today i dont get any sound from music files or movie files.there is a speaker icon in the task bar but when i click it is not highlighted .it is faint and does not allow me to do anything please help

Check Device Manager for problem devices and for warning yellow punctuation marks.

Run dxdiag and try the troubleshooting ideas there.
