any idea on how to fix a cdrom?

1. i had opened my cdrom, coz its not reading
2. i found out that its lens, is kind of being stuck or not freely moving.
3. the problem is mechanical in nature.

A new one is under $30, and if the lens is not moving correctly on its tracks it probably never will. That's a delicate mechanism, if it's been forced to move when it's not supposed to it's most likely damaged. If you have touched the lens itself, you can toss the drive, it's history. Trying to repair it would not be worth the time and effort, new CD ROM drives are inexpensive these days.

:p
Buying a new of course is easy, but fixing it will give me a better understanding of the machine.

1. sometimes it will work when i lubricate the railings where the lens are located, i have to be really careful when doing it so as not to destroy the delicate mechanism.

2. but if i play VCDs which disk access is continous, the lens will be stuck again in the later period. so Im thinking of other ways or reasons why the lens were being stuch on its railings.

A good challenge is worth the effort.

agentLX,
Lubricating a damaged mechanism is not the same as fixing the mechanism, it will always be a problem. I would replace the drive and move on.

That reminds me of the case of Nicola Tesla:
He was being taught about the early DC motors [at University], and suggested to his tutor that it might be possible to make an AC motor [no such thing existed at that time].
His lecturer ridiculed the idea.
Told him to forget it and get on with the work at hand.
Thank goodness young Nicola kept going anyway and ended up inventing the 3-phase AC motor.

The only reason that the human race has made any progress and now dominates all other living things is because we have unquenchable curiosity.

Tesla had too much time on his hands and his amazing work on what became known as the Unified Field Theorem was dangerous!

Go ahead and keep that drive around for experimenting on, but I would also suggest you buy a new drive for reliability's sake. We all need something to experiment on every now and then...

Thanx for the buying tips,
I already bought a new one, and installed it on a server PC.

I still kept the "lazy cd drive", coz it still works after cleaning the levers and other mechanical stuff, I had just to be careful not to ruin the good parts. The lazy cd drive is still useful coz I had to install some progs to some standalone PCs.
