The grandkids are at it again! I ran AdAware and quarantined 9 bad boys, then ran HJT and got the following log. Please advise if anything should be deleted. Many thanks! ~ Scarlett

Vivien, oops. I mean Scarlet,
Is the pc having any problems? I don't see anything bad in that log. What were the 'baddies' miss Leigh, uh sorry again, miss O'Hara? If it were just tracking cookies or like things, don't you worry none too much about it darlin'... ;)

Just take care of them with SB&D and AdAware and that should do it. Or you could just go clear out the cookies manually like the old days that have 'Gone with the Wind'.. (lame I know  )

Forever yours,
Clark
___________
Edit:
sorry, missed this one:
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk.disabled

get rid of it. Supposedly it is a remnant of a virus that has been previously dealt with but should be deleted anyway.

This one I don't recognize:
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

Aah, Rhett--you make my heart flutter! Some things never change!

The "baddies" were 8 data miners and 1 dialer. I will take care of the others you found post-haste.

The main problem with this computer is that the screen will start jumping and render all data unreadable. I have suspected both monitor problems and video card problems, but the symptom is intermittent and not visible on all screen displays. I always suspect foul play first, and therefore I run Spybot and AdAware before doing anything else.

Question--on another subject entirely, but I know you will have the answer:

This computer does not physically turn off after shutdown. Is this a function of the motherboard or the power settings--or even the OS? Just can't remember PC Hardware 101. :)

Thanks for the quick response!

p.s. I have found the following information on PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe:

http://help.lockergnome.com/lofiversion/index.php/t13953.html

After reading what they have to say, please let me know which removal tool you would recommend.

Thanks again!

Fix the Entry with Hijack this,, and then delete the file.

This is actually just an optional fix... It is a registration reminder, but a lot of people suspect it spies and it isn't really needed, so I would get rid of it...

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

Otherwise, your log looks fine... If you would like we can do deeper scans, but you are probably okay...

Thanks, Budfred. Not very much gets downloaded on this computer--except when the grandchildren are here. One wants Nick, Jr., and the other wants anything sports-related. After they leave, I run the spyware programs!

I ran into another problem while attempting to run Crucial Technology's system scan for memory upgrade recommendations. I had to reset my security options to allow ActiveX downloads. After the Crucial System Scanner downloaded, I also had two other programs on my Desktop: conspawn.exe and meminfo.exe. I have since deleted all three programs from the Desktop, but none of them ever appeared in the Add/Remove Programs list. Curious.

Here is the big problem: Every time I try to run the Crucial System Scanner, my computer locks up completely, and I have to crash it. Upon reboot, the three above-mentioned programs reappear on my Desktop! I really believed that Crucial Technology was a "trusted site," and I may have other problems that are preventing my use of the scanner feature. If you have any information on these programs--or experience with the Crucial System Scanner, please advise.

Many thanks!

Scarlett

Both of those files are used for legit purposes or can be malware... Did you have this problem before or after the HJT log?? If it started after, post a fresh HJT log... If before... Try running an MWavScan... It will produce a log in the lower window that has the bad list and you will need to use Ctrl-C to copy it and then paste it here for review.... If the list is extremely long, you can just paste the lines that begin with the word "File" since those are the ones we need to be most concerned about...

http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/free_utilities.asp

It will suggest that you buy the product to fix what it finds, but that is not necessary... Just post the bad part of the scan and we will deal with it...

Sorry, Budfred, I wasn't specific enough. The current problem is on a different computer. I ran AdAware and Spybot on the second computer and fixed the problems it found, then I ran MWav. It found 3 viruses, but I have been unable to copy the bad part of the scan using Control C--the only thing it copies is the following: C:\WIN98\Desktop\asa.jpg

Since the scan is so small, I can just type what it says:

Object "AltNet Spyware/Adware" found in File System! Action Taken: No Action Taken
Object "BonziBuddy Spyware/Adware" found in File System! Action Taken: No Action Taken
Object "iSearch Spyware/Adware" found in File System! Action Taken: No Action Taken
Entry "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Mod uleUsage" refers to invalid object "C:\WIN98\Downloaded Program Files\ieatgpc.dll" Action Taken: No Action Taken
Entry "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Sha redDLLs" refers to invalid object "C:\Program Files". Action Taken: No Action Taken

I am a little surprised that Spybot and AdAware missed those--they have found them in the past.

I haven't run a HJT scan on this computer yet, but I will do so and post it here. I realize now that I should have started a separate thread on this second computer--I will do better in the future, and I apologize for the confusion I caused. Everything in this post is related to the second computer. The first one is fixed.

As far as conspawn.exe and meminfo.exe and the Crucial system scanner are concerned, after I deleted them a second time and rebooted, they are no longer appearing on this Desktop. I have not tried running the Crucial system scanner from the Crucial website again, so I don't know whether my computer will still lock up, but my immediate concern is getting rid of these three viruses and fixing the Registry keys if that is necessary.

I will run the HJT scan now and report back with that information.

Thanks again!

Those MWav items are not a problem... They represent orphaned files that the scan picked up that are identified with those malware programs, but they are not active... A Registry cleaner might take care of them, but be careful to backup the Registry before using one...

Your log looks clean... You seem to have an unfinished install process for MS Office:

O4 - Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\WIN98\Application Data\Microsoft\Installer\{90110409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0050048383C9}\misc.exe

And you could fix this to see if it makes a difference with the Crucial scan:

O16 - DPF: {A90A5822-F108-45AD-8482-9BC8B12DD539} (Crucial cpcScan) - http://www.crucial.com/controls/cpcScanner.cab

You might want to update Spybot and run TeaTimer to provide a little more resident protection...
