Hi there guys,

first off I want to say im glad I found a forum board for computer issues great thing , I used to think I was smart but Iv done run my self into a probelm I could use all your expertise on ...

So Iam building a computer an I decided to use some old parts i hadent used in a few years (Iwill Xp333r w/ amd xp 1800+) I also have a delta apha hsf with the SHE fan back years ago this one the turbo air for overclocking.. Well so Im setting this computer up this is where I could use some help ..I didnt set up the SHE fan ontop the delta aphla hs (yea I guess im dumb), Since it wasnt going to be a overclocked chip (bios was reset prior).. so I get it all setup an get it to boot first thing I get some ram issues it didnt see the ram so I take out 1 of the 2 chips to see well I got it too boot the moniter turned on an I got a load of errors that Im sure were just common , said my IDE01 were mixed Im guessing maybe IDE0 shouda been hooked up the hdd an not he cdrom so thats little stuff... So im thinking I got this all figured out, Im about 1 minute into the boot, I go into bios an go into Iwill smart settings an instantly the computer locked up .. well needless to say I wasnt sure what it was at the momment so I shut it down do the change on the IDE's an BAh go figure the signal stops going to the mobo, so then Im shiat dont tell me it overheated , I put my hand on the deltaheatsink an it was cool , not even warm really, so Im thinking how could it have overheated?? or maybe it did just didnt need to get that hot, (to jump off for a sec reason this pc was shut down was becasue I was worried I was gonna blow my cpu becaue I beleived my power supply connectors were dying, a few times Id come home from work an my computer would be quiet but on... the SHE fan had stop working an then i thought the cpu was done.. but I dunno call it lucky but the next day I put the SHE fan on a new power jack an it booted right up ) So Im thinking almost hey maybe I just need to put the fan on an let it chill for awhile, so I put the fan on an let anight go by , next mornin I try to boot it thinking like it has cat lives it will come back .. It didnt =( SO I concluded ,maybe it was my motherboard I noticed some brown spots on the powerjack on the mobo almost like they had burnt up.. I think i was in denial of cpu maybe being burnt since the heat sink wasnt hot, its got a core spacer on it so core wont crack, artic gel ..
SO I go an order an new mobo (syntax 266AD) an I set it all up even got a new hdf for it since it didnt have the mount options, an YES i made sure the fan was plugged in, so I cross my fingers an boot an sure enough the same probelm, no signal to the moniter no beeps just a power on with fans... so now its bluntly in my face its the cpu....

SO I just ordered a new Amd athlon chip, Im very paraniod I will ruin the chip now because of the bad cpu I tried on the new motherboard.. some reason in my head I think the cpu infected the new mobo an that when I get the new AMD chip an put in that motherboard its not gonna work an it will ruin my new chipaswell .. is that true, can bad cpu's ruin new motherboard.. I just dont wanna ruin this $100 chip I got... I already feel like I wasted $50 on the motherboard since I tried all day with it an the oldchip .... Would you put this new amd chip in the syntax motherboard (how common do mobo's go defective because someone test a possible bad chip in it)? is it risky .. what are the odds the motherboard burns up the new chip .. just feels like its possible I infected the new motherboard with the prior old bad chip ... any insight on this issue would be GREAT much thanks in advange guys am gals out there .. I just wanna get this pc going an not be doing circles buying new mobo an processors cuz Im passing a defected chip to each one.

thanks

This was a piggy-back post so I split it and assigned it a thread of its own.

Not easy to make sense of your post, but here are a couple of suggestions and comments.

Give us some complete system specs, that's usually helpful.

Remove all components [disconnect data and power cables] and try it. I've seen bad IDE and CD ROM drives or cables cause no boot situations.

The motherboard could have fried the CPU, I've seen that happen, but it was a burned out motherboard with copper traces burned on bottom. Not knowing about the burned circuits I tried a known working CPU and when I put it back in a spare machine I built for tinkering, CPU was fried. Troubleshooting a customer's computer cost me a good CPU...and that machine is still sitting here useless.

If I understand this correctly, you left the machine running for a good while with a heatsink but no fan? The heatsink is the only reason it didn't fry the CPU in 30 seconds, they get really hot in a hurry. In 30 seconds you can fry eggs on a CPU. Literally. If things got hot enough to damage the motherboard so that it had to be replaced, I'd say chances are very good it damaged the CPU as well.

Trying the CPU in a new motherboard is usually worthwhile and normally shouldn't damage anything, but there is always a chance it could have shorted components inside and therefore short the motherboard too, same as the motherboard I mentioned above damaged a CPU because of a short. That chance is not great but it does happen. If you have burned spots anywhere on the board it is not a good sign.

Unless you have some known working parts sitting around for testing purposes, the best way to go would probably be take the board and CPU to a computer shop and ask them to test both. Otherwise you're buying new parts again not knowing whether the rest is going to work or not. Not knowing whether anything on the motherboard has been damaged, and taking into consideration the questionable situation, I don't think I would want to try a new CPU in that board until I verified that it is in working condition.

thanks for the info, yeah basicly its obv the chip is burnt up if it didnt work in the new motherboard, i never ran it on the mobo without heatsink .. I got 2 minutes into bios withou the fan on the delta-aphla heatsink (addressing my old board)... an after the lockup I didnt get the signal to the moniter so I ordered a new motherboard...then I installed the same cpu into the new mobo same probelm so signal so I was worried that I may have shorted out the new motherboard trying over an over to boot this chip, its a brand new syntax mobo, I would be really surprised if the chip shorted the board.. but Iv had bad cpus ruin good boards before ... Im gonna take my chances installing this new amd chip i just ordered inside the syntax board an cross my fingers in hope the motherboard wasnt effected by the prev bad chip.. the board looks fine no brown spot ect... basicly just tried booting it with a burnt cpu an parnoid that the cpu shorted the new board inhence the new chip would either short or not work. .. but thats way it is I dont have any other parts to test in the board... I will be VERY suprised if the motherboard ruins the new cpu aswell.. but I dont have much of a chioce Unless I buy a new motherboard for the new cpu an ensured both componts arnt bad.. I never ran the bad chip on the new motherborad without the fan .. so once again I pray the motherboard wasnt effected by a bad cpu..

thanks pcguide.. still any inlight on this issue be great
