I believe when trying to delete some of my programs one of them must have also contained an important file.
On booting I reveive the following message "Error loading Explorer.exe" You must reinstall windows" This is followed by: "A required .DLL File
C:\windows\system\msvcrt.DLL not found"
Tried using my 98 reboot disc and also inserted my windows 98 disc..all to no avail.
Ok, if you can use your Windows bootdisk to boot do you get to a prompt that looks like this?
A:\>_
If so then type C:
then dir_msvcrt.dll_/s (a space instead of the under score)...this will search the entire c drvie for the file. If it cannot be found you can go here (http://www.drd.dyndns.org/index2.html) and grab the version for your version of Windows, and put it on a floppy.
After booting to the bootdisk, pop it out and the put in the one with the missing dll on it and then at the prompt type:
A:\>copy msvcrt.dll_c:\windows\system\msvcrt.dll (bold text only, space instead of underscore)

try restoring the registry
-boot the system pressing CTRL Key or F8
-when the menu appears, choose the bottom option (only DOS promt)
-then type "c:\scanreg /restore"
-when the sacanreg screen appears, follow the instruction to choose a version of your registry earlier than the day you delete those files
-restart
Good look!

Cannot get to a prompt, however, opening in safe mode (safe mode command prompt only) I can get a prompt.
I downloaded the file msvcrt.dll to a floppy.
When I typed in A:\>copy msvcrt.dll C:\windows\system\msvcrt.dll it responded "Bad command or file name" I could not type it using "bold" as you suggested, nothing on the keyboard would give me bold!
Is there any way, using the keyboard, I can clear "everything" and put my 98SE disc in and reload it? Thanks again for your effort, it is appreciated. Bud:
Fiist only the part after the ">" needs to be typed in; don't forget the spaces, and second I put it in bold so it would stand out from the rest of the response....
If you have the win98se disk then all you need is the windows boot disk (check in your BIOS to make sure that the floppy is set first in the bootorder), you boot to the boot disk, type in format c: at the prompt and when it is done, reboot...this time select with CD support (from the bootdisk) or change the BIOs to CD first in the boot order, then put in the win Cd (if you are booting from a floppy type setup, if booting from the CD it should automatically start).

HI JMC, I managed to change the Bios to "Floppy first for booting" everything went well and I got a prompt A:\> As a "real" amateur geek
could not figure out what to do next?? As I said I have the 98SE disc. Would really appreciate if you could give me a laymans step by step from the prompt on...my sincere thanks, Bud
