Hi all,
now before anyone says "stronzo, this is a PC forum"
i was given an old mac with os 8.06 and it stills functions ok...i know nothing of macs but want to give the nice elderly couple next door the comp and set it up for just internet.

Can anyone tell me where to go (and not literally) for basic mac help...i will see if there are versions of adaware and spybot and a good A/V available for mac.

If this posting has offended anyone then just wipe it.

cheers
anton :)

What does that mean ? I don:t understand what you are talking about..
Mac manuals if handy might be referenced though.

Anton,
Macintosh 8.06 is really old. The Mac has been ignored by most virus/adware writers although it is likely to be targeted if OS 10.x becomes popular. No Adaware/Spybot for Mac. Only one AV that I have heard of.
I am moving this to PC World as definitely not Windows related. We seldom wipe posts unless really offensive.

And Yes, this is a PC Forum.

It's been a long time since I've played with a MAC. Does the PC have an ethernet port?, a modem?

Does the old couple want dial-up or broad band. You have to call the ISP and they will have the protocol to set up that OS for their service.

If it's dial-up, the setup will be different than broad band.

hi classic,
yes it came with an external modem...
i hooked them up to an ISP and they provided me with procedure for
setting up a dial up plan (they wanna see what the internet is like first)

Any idea on protecting their surfing...or do they really need it?

cheers
anton ;)

Since they are using a MAC, I think they are pretty safe. I do not know of any firewalls for the MAC.
