My computer has become infcted with a Trojan/start up that I can't easily get rid of. I've just had the computer cleaned up but have ogt this new nasty. It has loaded an About:blank search page in Internet Explorer (that doesn't search for anything). I can't open any explorer windows from the desk top! I've tried to get rid of it with AdAware and AVG Free, but this didn't work and matbe made it worse. I can't download HiJack This or CW Shredder because when I try to open the .exe file a message appears " a required .DLL file MSVBVM60.DLL was not found.
What is going on? Can this be fixed?

Until the experts come along to give proper removal instruction if you go to the following link you will be able to download the dll. Get it and install it then try once again to open the programs up. I would suggest posting an HJT log for the others to see so that they can guide you.

Hi

I downloaded the DLL file and got CW Shredder and HiJack this to open OK. So here is the HIJack this log file. Thanks.

First, run the Housecall (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/) on line virus scan.

Second: Download, install and update CWSHREDDER (http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html),
do not run it yet.

Third: Download, unzip and update Aboutbuster (http://www.subratam.org/main/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19&Itemid=41) . Do not run it yet.

Boot into safe mode.

Run CWSHREDDER
Run Aboutbuster twice
Load HJT and place a check next to the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\se.dll/space.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\se.dll/space.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [intell32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\intell32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSGuard] C:\Program Files\PSGuard\PSGuard.exe

Now re-boot and boot to safe-mode command prompt only.

If you are at the C:\WINDOWS> folder skip to step 2.

At the C:\> prompt type CD WINDOWS and press enter
At the C:\WINDOWS\> prompt type CD TEMP
At the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\> folder type attrib -s -h -r *.* and press enter
At the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\> folder type erase *.* and press enter
at the confirmation prompt type Y and press enter
At the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\> folder type cd content.ie5 and press enter
At the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\CONTENT.IE5> folder type the attrib command above
At the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\CONTENT.IE5> type erase *.* and press enter
at the confirmation prompt type Y and press enter
re-boot

Re-post a new HJT log and the contents of the about buster log

BEFORE YOU TYPE THE ERASE *.* COMMANDS, BE SURE YOU ARE IN THE FOLDER INDICATED

Hi Classicsoftware I have done the first 2 steps but when I try to open Abourbuster.exe a message appears " the database is either corrupted or missing. Please download a new one. How do I do this?

Thanks

Budfred

Try this one....

Budfred, this is the same as the link from Classicsoftware. What is the problem here is AboutBuster no longer available? Do I need to use it or can I just skip this bit safely? I'll wait for help before doing anything.

sorry thought i had another link for AB but not available

Budfred

That link works fine for me... Try this one:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/spyware/AboutBuster5.zip

If that doesn't do it, go to the main page for that:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/aboutbuster.php

or try this one:

http://www.geekstogo.com/www.malwarebytes.biz/AboutBuster5.zip

or see if you can get it directly off of this page:

Ok. I got AboutBuster to work sort of. I don't know why it couldn't do anything to start with. But after finishing the scan a message comes "Run-time error '339' Component 'comcttl32.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered; a file is missing or invalid. I ran CWSHREDDER and it reported no problems. Then i rebooteed in safe mode and carried out directions OK, until I couldn't get the directory to go to cd content.ie5 "invalid directory". I tried many different things here and noted on rebooting that the temporary internet files are C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\content ie5 if you know what I mean. Anyway I will post the new HiJack this log and await further advice.

Your log looks clean to me. Let's see what Budfred has to say. I would like to do what the doctors call watchful waiting. Kep and eye on your PC. Post a new HJT log every day or so and if it remains the same, we'll start adding protections.

Budfred
08-16-2005, 07:49 PM
The log does look clean... I would try a Silent Runners log rather than just doing the wait plan... There are too many overly aggressive thieves stealing data from people these days...

Please download SilentRunners from here:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip
Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, it will create a logfile on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

It looks ok... So, like classicsoftware said, keep an eye on things and maybe post a fresh HJT log in a couple of days so we can be sure it is still clean....

Do you have a firewall?? If not, it would be a good idea to set one up... Here is my prevention speech to help protect against getting reinfected:

This is a good time to set up protection against further
attacks. Read the article linked below about "How did I
get infected". You need an antivirus that is updated, a
good firewall (a router firewall is not enough) and a
spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads.
All of these have good free versions available... be very
cautious about any security software that advertises in
popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually
useless, but also often have malware in them....

Your log looks clean to me:

1) Run Windows update and apply ALL critical patches. Run this once a month on the third week of the month.

2) Download, install, update and keep updated Spywareblaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html) .

3) Use a software firewall. I personally prefer Sygate (http://www.sygate.com/firewall/) though Budfred is a Kerio (http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html) man.

4) Avoid using Internet Explorer and Outlook/Outlook Express. Use Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) and Thunderbird. (http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/)

5) Keep your A/V software up to date and scan regularly.

Especially use a firewall... I don't see evidence of one in your log and you are in major danger without one... Please install one ASAP... Keep in mind that Sygate has been acquired by Symantec and will probably not be available much longer...
