Internet Explorer Address Bar - does not work

I have IE 6 on an XP Home Sony Vaio System.

When I type a web address in the address bar and hit enter (or Go) nothing happens.

If I click on hyperlinks these work.

Any idea what the problem is?

I would start with scans with Adaware and Spybot

Report back what they find

and then post a hijackthis log.

Please post back if you need the links for the programs above

What is even more wierd is that if you enter a web address in the Address Bar and hit enter, the windows flag starts to move but the page does not display for approximately 1-2 minutes.

If I click on a hyperlink it immediately responds.

There must be a problem with some aspect of the XP configuration - help??

Does the same thing happen if you enter the url into the run box?

Does the page actually appear normally after the 1-2 minutes?

You could try: IE -- Internet Options -- Programs (and then hit the "Reset Web Settings" button).

Also empty your Temporary Internet Files if you havent done so recently.

The web page appears instantaneously from the run box which is the usual bahaviour.

I had previously reset the web settings and cleared out the temporary internet files and cookies.

Any further thoughts?

Does using an IP address in the url make any difference?

eg the pcguide's forums would be:-

The key thing is that the address I enter needs http:// at the start of the address to work i.e. http://www.bt.com works and www.bt.com does not work.

Can you assist further?

With my own IE and Firefox the http prefix gets added OK. Perhaps (not sure about this) your's doesnt because you are not using a default search engine.

One tip is that if you ever want to get quickly to any .com (it must be a .com) you just enter the domain name in isolation into the Address Bar and then hit Enter with the CTRL key depressed; eg you would just enter bt (from the example you have shown) into the Browser's Address Bar, hold down CTRL and hit Enter.

I am using the default search engine so I think it is something else.

I also know about control+enter completing the domain.

I will keep searching for a solution.

I am getting this error message whenever I use my address bar.
I get http:///?%20netscape when I type in netscape instead of http://Netscape.com. Where is the "/?%20" coming from?

I was having the same problem and found a solution on another forum. Check it out. The solution about uninstalling nVidia firewall worked for me.
