Hi,

I have this rather annoying problem with my windows 2000 computer, over the last few days it just blue screens and reboots itself. This even happens when the computer is just idle and it is getting rather annoying.

It seems to enter a event 1001 in the system log each time it happens, with the following description.

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000001e (0xc0000005, 0xa0020ae7, 0x00000001, 0x0514247c). Microsoft Windows 2000 [v15.2195]. A dump was saved in: C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini081205-02.dmp.

I have gone through various troubleshooting checks and searching on the web etc, but I cannot still nail this problem, does anyone have any ideas.

Probably, this is a hardware issue. It looks like your computer overheats. Check your computers temperature.

That had crossed my mind as well, but after opening the case and testing that the 3 fans are working, I have ruled it out.

I also took the oportunity to reseat the main components like Ram, graphics card etc, but it still does it.

I have also downloaded software for testing the harddrive and run full hard drive tests, but still no results.

Further searching of the web has revealed that the error message in the log file is pretty useless, as it can mean anything :(.

One thing I am trying at the moment is a new UPS unit, as there seems to be quite a few posts on the web about how computers like mine can be affected and act like this when they are not getting enough power.

W2K is normally a stable and tolerant OS (I have it on one of my five machines). According to my digging around M$, you can get that error for a number of things--too little HDD space left, corrupt or conflicting device drivers (any new?), and memory issues. Download MEMTEST86, install it to a floppy, boot from the floppy and run the full test--takes maybe an hour.

If you don't have a floppy, download Ultimate Boot CD and burn the iso. Boot from the CD and under Mainboard Tests you'll find MEMTEST86.

You can get both those utilities from MajorGeeks.com.
