I have a sub-folder inside another folder in my documents that I want to resrtict all access to. I want to make this so that only I have access to it.

When I click on Sharing/security in the properties of the folder and set it to MAKE THIS FOLDER PRIVATE the bottom of the windows informs me that Windows firewall is configured to allow this folder to be shared by any user on the computer. The Win firewall is turned off. I DO NOT WANT TO TURN ON WIN FIREWALL as I used Sygate firewall.

After selecting the make folder private all items (including the folder name) changed from black ot blue (as it should)

How do I do this? How do I secure this from prying eyes? (without installing third pary software if possible) or does Xp not a llow the securing of individual folders? (I was under the impression that it did)
Winxp prof (sp2) on NTFS
The "My Documents" folder is stored on one of the partitions on my second HDD which is also NTFS

ErnieK ; Private folders only works on the my documents folder and it's subfolder. If you want to deny access to any other folder I believe you have to turn simple file sharing off????

Ernie, is this file on network? Is this computer shared with other users? Who are you trying to protect it from?

Assuming you have turned off Simple File Sharing or it is not turned on:

File permissions on a network are cumulative. This means the share permissions and the NTFS permissions are added together and the most restrictive applies. If you have multiple accounts on your network or PC that you want to restrict you need to make sure the other account is not a member of the admin group. Once this is done you can manage there permissions easily via the Security tab of the folder or subfolder. If you want them to have no access to the file, deny them access. Deny overrides any other permission. It is explicit, which basically means when there is a conflict with other permissions allowing them permissions deny wins.

I do this with files on my machine that I don't want my kids to see. They have a locked down user on my machine. I only allow internet access through my machine. When they want to do something they have to log onto my machine with their user name. Then they can access the internet. But I control what they have access to through NTFS security permissions.

My computer is used only by myself, and therefor does not have more than one user account. It is on a home network.

But like yourself VARIABLE I want to restrict total access to this folder when others are using the computer with my permision (and whilst I may have to leave them for a short period. I can restrict Internet access OK so I just need the one folder set so that only I can access it (if possible form either computer on my network - but will be content with access only from here).

Will I have to remove it from the MY Documents folder and leave it sitting on the drive by is-self so that it is no longer a sub-folder (as it is when sitting in MD's)? (then put a shortcut to it on the desktop)
