I installed dsl on all my kids pc's. I installed all the protections on 2 of them, but didn't get the other two covered.

We moved and I started working, just so you know I wasn't blowing it off.

Anyway, Joe's computer shows that it is connected, but when I try to go online, It crashes!!His DSL connection goes from good to marginal. I have installed AVG, CWShredder, AD Aware, HJT, Trojan hunter, and just about everything else listed under Budfred's signature, from a burnrd cd. It will NOT let me run spybot S & D because I can not get online.

I tried to copy the HJT to a floppy but keep getting a message saying the disk needs to be formated. It is a known good disk.
I will keep trying to get a HJT log on a floppy.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

If it has a USB port and you have a jumpdrive, you could use that to transfer the HJT log...

The antimalware programs you are using need to be updated to cover the latest garbage, so make sure you have installed the latest updates before burning a disc... Also, the most effective tool around right now is Ewido, so here are instructions for running it:

Please download, install, and update the NEW free version of Ewido trojan scanner (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/):

When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".

When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.

After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.

If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.

When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

It has a USB port but what is a jumpdrive? How do I update when I can't get online? Can I update on the burned cd? If so, how? Do I install this on my PC update it and then burn it? If so How?

I just started using the burner today! I couldn't get it to work before I replaced the power supply last week. I figured out how to burn the applications purely by accident.

Thanks!!

Here's an example of a "jump drive" (they go by various names): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820155421

That one is 1GB. You can get them smaller and cheaper. CompUSA and the like sell them.

If you have another PC with working internet access, you can go to a place like www.majorgeeks.com and download the latest virus definitions for AVG and also the spyware definitions for Spybot S&D. You would then use those to locally and manually update those applications. You might be able to do the same with AdAware, I'm just not sure. I've done the other manual updates, but never had to do it with AdAware. For CWShredder and HJT, you just need the latest versions. With TrojanHunter, assuming you are using the trial version, you must update manually anyway and the trial will timeout 30 days from the date it was downloaded, not installed.
