I believe I was scammed. Yesterday, August 19th, I received a phone call from a John Fields who gave me his agent number 132 saying I was eligible for a $5,000 grant, then he gave me over to an Allen (sp?) Jackson who asked for my bank account number and a check number as they had to charge me $296.96 in order to process this grant check. He gave me a phone number 1-866-669-1222 which I have called SEVERAL times and I think it is a Bogus number.

They identified themselves as "Callcom Financial Institute". Needless to say, I put a STOP PAYMENT on the check and will change my checking account asap. Thank you for your consideration.

Well, thanks for the information and best of luck. I hope you also notified the police and maybe the FBI. Fraud is a very serious crime.

EDIT: Nice website you have there.

I believe electronic checks are an instantaneous deduction from your checking similar to using your debit/cash card...

Have you had a conversation with an actual customer service person from your bank?

Yes, I spoke with my bank and paid them $15.00 to put a STOP PAYMENT on that check . I also notified the FTC and Phonebusters :)

You will also have to remain vigilant, they have your checking account number and can have checks printed on that account. I personally would close the account and open one with another number.

Phew! Thank god!

We had a similar situation here in Virginia. People were making random calls claiming to be giving away a JC Penny $500 shopping spree. All they needed was $5 which they could 'conveniently' take from your bank account.
