I do a little light web-work and I would imagine some of the other people here do as well. Would it be possible to create a forum, perhaps as a SIF, dedicated to web design? I am sure it comes under the Programmins SIF, but webdesign can involve as little or as much programming as is required, it is more of a design issue.

I know as a designer I enjoy getting feedback and opinions concerning the appearence and usability of my sites and would appreciate opinions of a large audience such as that this forum could offer.

Just a thought for a little extra stuff we could have?

I second that. I have toyed with web development but haven't been succesful, in part because I lose interest quickly. I really want and need to do this because I need a site for my business and I would like to do it myself and not pay. I've tinkered with NVu, WebEasy, FrontPage, and Publisher. I've struggled mightily with Macromedia. I actually did get one project nearly done and looking good when I previewed it in FireFox. However, when I looked at it in IE it was really messed up.

I think a forum section like that would be great. A little colaboration and review and pointers might motivate people like me to actually get it done.

Sounds like a great idea. There must be some experienced web designers out there who could help us all.
I've used NetObjects Fusion, but just for fairly basic sites.

I've asked a web design based question on this site before but did not get a answer to the problem as it seemed a sporadic problem. If we had a forum specially for web design, it may attract some web experts to help out. I am sure there will be other specific web design forums, but the folks on this forum seem patient and forgiving to newbies, something I applaud as we were all newbies once upon a time. A web designer with that attitude would be a real bonus.

I've just committed money to a hosting service and I'm in the process of developing my site. Everything I did before this was play or just familiarization. A dedicated section here would be great, but until such time as Charles reallocates one of the less used sections or creates a new one (if he ever does), we may have to "squat" somewhere. I think the "Programming SIF" may be the most suitable for a number of reasons. It's really seldom used here and web development can run the gamut from copy & Paste/drag & drop to actual coding, so in that's sense it's a fitting location. I'll be posting my first question there soon--sometime tomorrow.

I certainly think the idea has merit! What I'm wondering about is how we would deal with the spammers who would see this as open season with a, "Would you tell me what you think of my site?"

I like the idea. I know there are some website builders around here. I have been doing my own site for couple of years. I'm just finishing up a total redesign of the whole site over the last couple of months. Would have been nice to have some pointers from the excellent folks around here. ;)

Although, web design really is a whole matter unto itself. But it would be nice to have a small area dedicated to it. Hmmm.......

I don't think spammers would be a big problem. Sure we would get some who would use it post there website for advertising, but they would be dealt with the same way all other spammers are.

How would we know if they really want us to look at their coding or design or just their product...or, would it make a difference?

Well some would be obvious. But beyond that I honestly don't know. I guess it is something that would have to be dealt with if it happens.

Like I said it would be nice to have a small area dedicated. But, I just don't know if it would be practical. Web design/building encompasses many different areas. From basic HTML to CSS, Javascript, Java, PHP, ASP, MySQL, PERL....... The list goes on and on.

It really would be a whole new can of worms if ixl were to do it. ;) Maybe it would be best to leave it in the SIF's????

Although even the big web design forums have a forum for computer problems.

Man, I have stop arguing with myself! LOL :p

The spammer thing would be a risk you would have to face, maybe a bit more risk than anywhere else here. I too think abuse would be obvious real quick. Abusers would have to be dealt with swiftly and on a case by case basis. Mods would have something more to do to earn those big bucks Charles is paying them :p

I have to 6th this motion. I have played a bit with web design and would like to get going on my own business site very soon. Yes, more work for the moderators and more chance for spam but these are facts of life I am willing to tolerate :D :p We used to have a member here that started his own forum for strictly web design. If I can find his site, and it is OK with IXL/mods, I will post a link. It was a very helpful and nice site the last time I was there. Still, it would be nice to have a place here to ask a simple question or get opinions on design concerns.

Mabey by adding 2 more mods you could keep it clean.

There are several good web dev forums, but as it has been said many times theres is no place on the web like the PcGuide. The people at one that I have gone to in the past has pretty nice people, but nowhere near as good as the folks that are around here. Not a place I would come for 3+++ hours a day and just hang. :)

If ixl and the mods are up to, I am all for it. ;)

My apologies for being the consumate curmudgeon...I suspect the wealth of information we could unearth with our corporate assiduity (words are so cool) and being able to pick the brains of those who have already broken the programming trail would make it all worthwhile. :)

I moved the current discussion here since this is a year old thread in a forum reserved for discussion about PCGuide forums...
