try making msconfig a read-only file, although future programs/devices may not be able to write/change the file.

Hello tomtom59
When you "uncheck the box in the start up tab in msconfig" values in one of the following keys in the Registry [which are responsible for providing the command information which results in programs being loaded at Boot time]are moved to backup keys which are not read to load the programs; hence the programs, normally, would not load.
KEYS WHICH LOAD
"Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr ent Version\Run\
Run
RunOnce
RunServices
RunServicesOnce
KEYS WHICH DO NOT LOAD
Run-
RunOnceEx
[not sure what the others become]
The other place is the "Startup" folder at
"C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"
My guess is that a Hewlett Packard program is checking for the presence of these at Startup and putting them back in place if they have been moved.
You would need to find out which one and disable it [if it's safe to do that].

aussieolie2 Thats why i dont think i should try that right now! Sylvander: I think you are right, if i delete it somethings will not work on this pc, HP has a tight grip on it! But I should be able to atleast stop it from starting some how, without deleting?

Please forgive me for some dumb questions but does it happen after a reboot or is it still enabled once you close the MSCONFIG window? It might be harder to forgive THIS one. Do you hit apply after deselecting? Sorry but some fixes can be right under our noses.

Fruss Tray Ted I do hit apply and ok, and it is unchecked in msconfig but (yes) when i reboot it comes back again. Like Sylvander said it is reconstructing itself on Reboot!

Hey Tom,
What do you have for HP programs? UI sometimes stands for user interface. Is there an HP program starting up? Maybe some java program? If you can find it you may be able to turn it off from inside the program's preferences.
The HP Help file should be pretty easy to find. Try the Start> Search> Files and Folders... routine. You might be able to find it in Explorer. If you find it, you can move it to a temp. folder or a floppy and see if any problems occur.
Make sure you have Explorer set to show all files. In Explorer click Tools> Folder Options> View> click "show hidden files and folders". Then look around. Sooner or later you'll find them.
If your computer came with a "recovery disc" instead of a windows installation disc, you might have to live with these proprietary programs. But not without a good try to shut them off! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Steve: HP Center UI is a toolbar that comes across the top of the screen at start up and you can access there INstant Support (which is not working for me now anyway) and you can click on shopping etc. I went to the start up folder and brought up Properties and in the Target command line it had a "-startup" at the END of it! Do you think if i deleted this ENDING ONLY, it would not start up at the beginning? If it dont work i can always put it back again!

Yeh, I really doubt that you need that thing. Can you find it in the Add/Remove area of the control panel? You might be able to uninstall it from there.

Steve, All You Guys, Thank You very much, i was able to delete it from the start up folder after all and i pinned it to the Start menu,(so i can start the program at will) and now it does not come up after restarting my pc! That was really annoying, waiting for that to load each time i started the pc. Thanks again Everyone. TOM

you could look for it using the sysedit tool, and "rem" it.
might be in autoexec.bat or perhaps mjc our HP wizard can help.
