ok i just got my brothers computer cause he is getting a new one, the one i got is a hp 6648c. it has a amd-k6 550 in it. now since its from hp i dont know to much about it like motherboard and such but i do know that it runs bad. with a clean format and install using the hp disks i put on norton system works and put everything so it didnt start on startup. i benchmarked it and it scaled to a 52! i have a celeron 333 and with stuff running it benchmarks at a 100 and the 333 has only 96 megs of ram while the 550 has 192. ive tried everything i could think of. i dont know what to do and its really anoying me. any help i can get would be apreciated. thanx

A good place to start would be at the HP web site for the latest drivers.
Also check in startup for HP proprietary software running in the back ground or services

i checked hp and they dont really have any updated drivers and i have even done a fully clean boot by taking everything off of start up except the esential stuff. i did it through msconfig so im pretty sure i got everything. it didnt help i got maybe 1 or 2 points on the benchmark. im thinkin its either in bios or on the motherboard. i dont know to much though. any other ideas?

Hey Revelstoke,

Welcome aboard the board.
There's a lot of things you can do and I'll try to list a few for starters.

You mentioned Norton's so use their system maintenance tune-ups like Speed disk and Disk doctor. Find them and use them all. They have been the #1 help for me in speeding up my system other than added RAM and minimizing startup programs in msconfig. I just ran it tonight and I can see a difference.

Other things to do is Cache RAM here (http://members.aol.com/axcel216/newtip12.htm#CACHRAM)
Also download and run the system test from Sisoft here2 (http://www.sisoftware.demon.co.uk/san_dem/html/dload.htm)to help tell you what you can do to enhance your system.
I'm sure there's others and other members will probably chime in a few for you. Good luck.

This space for George Carlin quotes:

You never really learn to swear until you learn to drive.

(He should broaden that to pc's.)
