Hi, this is my first time on this site. I'm looking to buy my first PC. I'm not too smart with this stuff buy I'm good enough. Anybody know where I can get a pretty sweet computer, I'm looking to spend between 1200 and 1800. Are there any good sites or anybody know any sites where they're having a promotional code or sale or anything?

You want a pre-built, huh? And what will you be using this computer for? Do you have any preference for store-bought vs online? How about Intel vs AMD?

A few more questions to add to Saph's...it's all about what you're looking for. So many companies trying to fill every possible niche out there that you really need to have an idea of what you want to do with your machine before you set out to buy it.

Do you want a gaming machine?
Do you want a workstation?
AMD or Intel?
Do you need massive storage capability?
Are you going to need a new monitor as well?
Got any ideas/restrictions regarding form factor? Or to be mroe broad, are you looking for a full tower, mid-tower, mini, etc?

Well you have several choices:

1) Buy a system from Dell or Gateway :(

2) Build it youself

3) Go to Comp-USA and find a system that meets your needs.

4) Find a local shop that will custom build or procure a system for you.

Where do you live?

If you must go with Intel *spits*, and you want a pre-built, I'd have to recommend a Dell. Customer support can be hit and miss, but at least you'll have it, which you won't if you build. Dell does use good parts, though, and they offer a wide range of custom packages.

Go check them out...do a little mixing and matching. They offer the option to customize any system, and they really do offer a LOT of options. If only they support AMD...

DigitalJ, just so you know, if you look around the forum enough you will find most around here do not like Dell. If you find a member here that likes Dell, that member is most likely not a regular, and that member probably has stock in Dell. ;)

Personally the only thing I like about Dell is making extra money fixing them. :D

Now I will stop there because we haven't had a Dell bashing thread for oh maybe two months or so. And I certainly don't want to get that ball rolling again. :D

No problem. Just thought I would warn you. If your really interested do a forum search for Dell. I am sure you will find hours of Dell bashing fun. :p

If you don't mind ordering online (or even over the phone) take a look at some of the smaller online builders like Monarch PC and ABS Computers. Those two are both really good for customer service and for building computers using standard off-the-shelf parts (which helps tremendously with avoiding that OEM proprietary $hit).

I recommend hp. They have pretty good customer service, (compared to most PC manufacters). They are a bargain too. Dell sucks. i must admit, though, Dell's are bargains too. Until you get to the XPS series. The old Dell's were okay, but the new ones plain suck. My cousin has a 6 month-old one, the 2.5" insert is falling off, the cd-rw drive prevents him from reading many CD's.

Here's a powerful system.
HP media center (http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/product_detail.do?storeName=computer_store&landing=computers&category=desktops/media_center/m7100y_series&subcat1=rts&catLevel=3&product_code=PX724AA%23ABA)
3GHz dual core, 1gb RAM, 250gb hard drive, DVD-rw/cd-rw drive, dvd-rom drive, fornt firewire port, and an X300SE 128mb video card, (a bit outdated, but will do for some gaming). S1,199, (without $50 rebate). Go for it, but you might want to buy a monitor. Monitor is sold seperately with this.
