I want to spend a few dollars and upgrade my CPU , but not change my MOBO ..i Have an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe .. I see from their website that I can add up to an Althlon 3200 + .. my questons :
1. Can I get away with using my exiting DDR 2700 Memory (at least for now)
2. Can I change the CPU and not have to reinstall Win XP SP2 ?
(leaving the rest of the system intact ..)
thanks in advance for your comments
Hank

Yes to both questions. Just tell us your budget and which CPU you have now.

Before you spend the money on the new cpu.
Double check the M/B rev. number

I have seen a few of the Asus M/B's that don't support the Updates.

Check the Asus website for details on what Rev. supports what

Budget around $120 ..
I have a REV 1.04 but according to the ASUS site I can go as high as Althlon 3200 + . I have an Athlon XP 1500 right now ..

Oh wow, now I feel inferior with a non Deluxe A7N8X mobo :(

As is the advice from old, is once again. Adding a minimal increase in processor speed say, 25%, is not as good as doubling your memory.

That mobo does SATA. If you are not at this time, utilizing that would be a big performance boost. Esp if you can use SCSI drives. Otherwize, upgrading to the fastest processor available for Socket A is not as good as maxing the RAM, if not already done that way.

Edit:
After 3200+, shouldn't you be considering 64bit,, or dually's even...

Going from an AthlonXP 1500+ Palomino to an AthlonXP 3000+ Barton is the same as doubling your CPU power. 1500 times two equals 3000. Remember that the ratings are based on AMD's own tests with regards to CPU power, so doubling the ratings is the same as doubling the clock speed of an Intel CPU.

Right now, Newegg only has OEM versions of the Barton 3000+ left, but you may be able to find retail versions at other places for the 3000+ and 3200+. $120 USD is the max I would pay for either of them right now. A retail version of the 400 FSB 3000+ is probably the most cost-effective upgrade for you. I recommend looking for that one.

I have a Gig of memory , sure I could go for more but I do alot of video encoding (analog to Digital, that seems to eat cpu ... hence the need for more cycles ..

upping to 64 bit would mean a new mobo and OS .. its a future / future direction

Isn't this what I just said? ;) except the os part. You'll only need a new os if you plan to keep the pc you're on as a package to sell to someone else. XP on the other hand,,

Did I forget to mention I have 2 systems literally interchangeable with all components? I don't know why, but I always buy in pairs... ;)
