Hi All,

I've got a thread going on this forum about my PC being slow to respond since upgrading a few parts including an ethernet card. All programs were slow to open at first but that seems to have changed. Now only my Internet Explorer is being slow to bring up web pages and can't handle Windows Update at all. I have an older PC that is running lightening fast if I connect it to the net with the same cables.

An Eircom (my service provider ) support tech had me run a check on my download speed and as that was okay (even now a movie trailer on apple.com just came up fast )suggested I run a virus and spyware check, which both came up clean.

Then I noticed this - whenever I unplug the broadband modem the PC that is giving trouble shows an icon in the taskbar that look like two monitors (which stays there until I reconnect) and a quick message that says "Local Area Connection 7 - A network cable is unplugged".

Do you think I've got the wrong type of ethernet card?
It's a Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family Gigabit Ethernet NIC.

If I shouldn't have started a new thread, sorry, but I thought it would get better attention.

Local Area Connection 7 means you have at least 6 more connections set up. I would completely remove them all and start over, so only one shows in the Network Connections applet of Control Panel. (I'm assuming this is XP, since I Just read the other thread related to XP processes.)

The "Cable Unplugged" error message is normal, it means exactly that, the network (CAT5) cable is unplugged.

I can't remember your specs from the other post, but it seems this is a P-4? I'm wondering if you have onboard (built in) LAN plus a PCI card, or are we looking at a different issue?

Check the Component ID (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=25502) thread, it should have a picture of the onboard LAN in the usual location, check to see if you have two in different places. One would be onboard, the other a card that can probably be removed. If you have two, that's why the error message is showing up about the cable, only one is in use, the other will always show an unplugged cable message.

If you only have one NIC, we'll keep digging...

yes it is xp.

there is the new card I installed myself that I'm using to connect to the net and something called a 1394 net adapter.

how do I remove the other 6 connections?

If you go to Network Connections how many connections are shown? Do you have just the one connection labled "Local Area Connection 7", or do you have 1-6 too?

If you only see one connection listed then the labe is just that, a meaningless label. Windows will keep adding to the network connection number, even after one has been deleted completely. So technically your computer could have only one connection there, and be called Local Area Connection 100.

network connections only show 3 items

the original internal modem = diconnected at device manager
LAN 7 new ethernet card = connected
1394 connection = disabled at device manager

I can't understand why only the web pages are slow - outlook and downloads are lightening fast. windows updates are now okay ~I think I was allowing firewall to block wrong thing . could this be same for web pages?
