Hi there - I am very new to this wireless network lark, and although I have a basic grasp of the technical side, I am not that technically literate. So please be gentle with me.

I set up a wireless network in my home about a month ago, and initially I had no problems with it. I am based in the UK, and I am currently using the network for the simple purpose of connecting my desktop (a Dell on XP), which is in a room without a phone line, to the internet. Our internet access is via a 1mb adsl line.

As I say, there were initially no problems, but in the last couple of days the computer seems to have stopped recognising that it is online. It definitely is online - the wireless network at the bottom indicates that the pc is connected to the wireless network, and the signal strength is excellent. And indeed Skype is working, as is one particular website when I access it through internet explorer.

But generally, when I try to navigate to a new page with IE, the pc indicates that it needs to connect to the internet, and a dial up menu (which is obviously no longer effective as the pc is not connected to a line) comes up.

In addition, Outlook cannot get new e-mails, as it says that it is not connected to the server.

I've tried fiddling about with the various connection permutations, but I haven't got anywhere. Its a bit tricky to get advice, as I obviously can't access the net from the pc at the moment. But if anyone has any thoughts on what could be wrong, I will print this off and take it home. If I you need more information, or think I should be posting this elsewhere, please let me know.

Thanks very much in advance

Greg

Its probably worth adding that my router is a D-Link DSLG604T and my wireless adaptor for my pc is also a D-Link product (I can't remember the model number)

Hi,
I am surprised that Skype is working. Are you sure with it? And that one particular web page - isn't it just loaded from the cache?
My suggestions:
1, try to determine if the problem is somewhere between your computer and router, or between router and internet. Try accessing the router config web page. Type 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 which should be the adress for the config page (may be different depending on your router -> try the router manual) you may be asked for password, but doesn't matter if you know or don't know it. If the dialog asking for password appears the connection to the router is OK
2, Try to check the TCP/IP settings on your computer Start -> connections -> right click on the wireless connection icon -> TCP/IP properties. This should be set to get the IP automatically and DNS also automatic (sorry I don't have english windows right now so I don't know exact messages, just guessing)
3, other computers on wirelles connection are able to access internet?
4, haven't you used bluetooth devices? There can be interference (my experience)
