I'm not sure if this is in the right place or not, but oh well. Does anyone know anything about grid computing? I've read in various places that it's a form of networking that allows for ultra-fast transfer speeds between systems on the grid. I've also read snip-its about computers on a grid being able to share resources...ie one computer is rendering video while another is idle, the active system can effectively leech GPU and/or CPU power from the idle system.
Is this technology that exists and functions now, or is it still in development? If it exists, how difficult is it to set up?
On a not-so-different note, I vaguely understand the concept of a file server, but what about an application server? Can you set up a server that contains all of your software, and boot that software simultaneously among a number of workstations on the network? What about a game, for instnace? Could you have six people on a network all booting a game from one location? What kind of speed issues would you run into?
I'm, just full of questions aren't I? :)
