My pc had a major crash so I'm on my mac trying to find a way to fix it. Heres the problem...
Windows 98 will not start up, in fact neither will my computer. Most of the time it won't even start at all and a constant loud beep will be coming from the tower. I figure its the fan, but when I let cool and try again I can only get scandisk in DOS to get about halfway through before it tells me something in my root directy is wrong and scan disk connot continue, then it crashed completely. I would prefer not to take my computer to a shop if anyone has any tips I would really like the help. Thanks.

Start By opening the case and checking the fans.
The constant beep is normally a bios warning “Memory Error”.
It can be caused by over heating

Fans are working, still getting the loud long beeps or getting nothing at all. The system will turn on but nothing happens, just a blank screen. When I hit the reset button the loud beeps start.???????

Your hard disk is crashing. Heat is not causing the problem. Your hard disk most likely has bad clusters and they always seem to originate in the root or boot sectors. Scandisk alone is not even completing, that should tell you something about the health of your hard disk. Replace it!!!

Constant beeping is a bad memory sign-has nothing to do with your Hard drive.

if your drive has/had bad clusters to the point it won't boot, you'd get an " invalid system disk " error, or a " no operating system found error.

In the stage you're describing the system hasn't even gotten to the POST stage yet, much less the boot stage.

Swap the memory module out with a known good one and make sure you have adequate cooling in there.
