Clear notebook of infection

Hello!
I'm currently in the help forum for multimedia working with Sylvander to fix a problem. He suggested that I come here and ask that my notebook be checked for infection.
I was wondering if you are able to do that?

Have you run any scans on the computer yet?? If not, start with Spybot and Ad-Aware (links in my signature) and then do an Ewido scan:

Please download, install, and update the NEW free version of Ewido trojan scanner (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/):

When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".

When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.

After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.

If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.

When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.


Next run a HijackThis scan... To run HJT, extract it to a permanent folder such as one
you create like C:\HJT. Close all open windows and
browsers and make sure that all programs are enabled if
you use msconfig. Run it and Scan, then Save the log.
When the log window appears, Right click to Copy it, open
your browser and come here to Paste the entire log. Do
not make any changes until it is checked since most items
are either benign or essential to the computer.

Here is the log for Ewido, from the looks of it I think I have a lot of spyware. Like 265.
I tried to post it, but it says that the post to long.

1. The text that you have entered is too long (18429 characters). Please shorten it to 10000 characters long.
WOuld it be easier to mail the ewido log to you?

Those Ewido references are just to malicious cookies and you can block most of them from even being planted on your computer in FireFox settings... You might want to clean out what you have in there now since Ewido left most of them... You can use Spybot to do that or use FireFox...

Your HJT log looks pretty clean, the only thing I would fix is this:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Use a HJT scan, put a check by it, close all other windows and press Fix checked...

You do need some more security on that computer or it will probably get more seriously infected... A firewall is a basic protection and Windows firewall is not enough, it won't protect against outgoing messages if you accidently download a trojan... I recommend Sygate or Kerio, both of which are available free at the moment (but not much longer)... I know Sylvander just recommends a system of backups, but not everyone is going to be able to do that enough to be protective, so I urge that you get fully armored...

I didn't read through that whole other exchange, but I suspect that you have either a driver or a hardware problem... DVD players can be touchy and if it is in a notebook, it may have been banged around a bit...

I personally use "Ad-Aware", "Spybot", "A-Squared", "Hijack This", "AVG", "ZoneAlarm", SpywareGuard", "Acerose Password Vault", "Blueyonder Instant Support Tool", "Spider", "Eraser", "Registry Monitor", "File Monitor", Process Explorer", "Wintop.exe".
Use every protection to avoid chaos creeping into your software and hiding there.
With all those protective and detective measures in place, so far I've never had any serious software problems that needed the use of a backup to fix them.
Things tend to get fixed while they're still small/insignificant.
But I have the backups sitting there as insurance [like a fire escape, hosereel or extinguisher], and VERY useful they are too.

I used them just recently for a hardware problem.
I'm fitting a PCI IDE RAID controller card to eliminate the use of DDO software.
Had to zero-fill the HDD, repartition, and reformat the HDD.
Restore of the backups was easy and quick; system was back up and running in no time.
But the new card is only seeing 32 GB of the 80 GB HDD!
Seems the MaxBlast software can set the HDD's internal circuitry to report a reduced size for the drive.
I learn something new every day.
Must have done that some time past.
If that's what is happening I've got to figure out how to undo it.

It sounds like you have run into the 32 Gig limitation... How did you work around that before??

The 32 GB limitation was produced by the motherboards' BIOS, and I used DDO software installed by "MaxBlast 4" to overcome that.
Whilst doing that I must have used the "Set Hard Drive Size" software feature within MaxBlast, and that would automatically set the drive to report a size that matches what the BIOS can see, so the BIOS thinks the drive attached perfectly matches what it can address.

But now [as advised here at the PC Guide] I want to use a controller card to eliminate the use of "Dynamic Drive Overlay".
Unfortunately, the BIOS of the new card is being told by the drive that it's a 32 GB drive, so all the [partitioning] software report the HDD as 32 GB, and that's all I get to use.
I'm in contact with "Maxtor" and now waiting for a reply explaining how to undo this. My email to them was read 7 hrs ago.

should he swap in a known good DVD-drive?
And if that doesn't work "repair" his Windows installation?
Or uninstall & reinstall his video player application first?

Given that it is a notebook, it would be difficult to swap drives, but that would be a worthwhile test if it could be done... If it works, it is probably a hardware problem and, if it doesn't, it is probably software... If it isn't possible to swap, a Repair Install would probably be the next step...

Just popped in from between classes at school. Sounds good. I think I'm going to guard my computer a bit more. I have norton and spyware, but I think I'm not using it right. Im going to keep working on this. Its good excercise to get computer savy :) Thanks post later :)
